Still no word on whether these are mobile or desktop parts, right? Last I heard they were releasing a RL-refresh alongside Meteor mobile, with Meteor desktop coming next year, but maybe this has changed now?

So what's this...tick-tock for CPU, tic-tac-toe for GPU?

this is what i've been waiting for for four years!

finally stoked to buy an Intel system update to go along w/ my AMD.
this would be a secondary system, but i'm excited to see how it and the 7900X3D will fare.
i'm going for the i-5 14xxx so this will end up being a nice budget build (inheriting older gpu - 6900xt)

tbh, Intel would be upgrading a hell of a lot more people if they released the low power mobile w/ cheap chipset for desktop even if they were strictly DDR5 as that's migrating to lappies as well as the cost dropping significantly.
imagine a 65 w i-9 or i-7 (laptop equivalent) to go with those 400+ watt psu's. a gold 650w psu would be enough instead of the 1000w + recommended for desktop 12 &13 gen
afaik, RL refresh has been scrapped and AL given 20% discounts to free up cash flow and reduce inventory

hmm more efficient you say? sure they not gona add PL3 or PL4 offset that? currently a 65 tdp chip with PL2 of like 120 is closest i can get to 95tdp cpu that actual use roughly that like my 6700k. I hear i can just limit it in bios and wont go above that but i dont new system to actual test that.

$500 entry level motherboards too? :)

    Kidding........to some degree.

I'll never again buy a desktop CPU with more than 100W of peak power usage. If CPU can't be comfortably cooled with NH-D15 at quiet fan speeds then I'll skip it. In a world of M2 chips and efficiency, these 200W, 300W, 400W PC desktop chips are like dinosaurs.

Intel's 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs are expected to launch later this year, targeting the mobility platform first. The chips are going to be the first to leverage chiplet technology and a hybrid x86 core architecture.

Good to see. I was really interested in the 13400 and 13500 until I found out their PPW just was so underwhelming. I don't like this stupid trend of sacrificing efficiency for the sake of short-lived boost clocks. Considering how variable testing conditions are in, I feel like you can never get a clear answer of how much performance you're really likely to get. Not everyone has a heatsink to handily dissipate 250W+.

This a perplexing topic. Anandtech took a shot at some testing and the results are rather interesting : https://www.anandtech.com/show/17641/lighter-touch-cpu-power-scaling-13900k-7950x. The testing wasn't perfect but it is a rather informative article.

Good thing you dont have to change motherboards in order to upgrade, oh wait :D

By the time you load up 8 P cores, you are going to be approaching thermal throttle, power throttle, and going into multithread territory. It's more efficient, silicon-wise, to load up the remaining silicon with densely packed e-cores, which have more compute power per mm^2 than p-cores. But the windows thread scheduler still needs work as it will often offload "background tasks" to e-cores entirely, even if p-cores are idle; There should be a special "high performance" power plan that will ALWAYS prefer p-cores, regardless of power, until p-cores are all utilizied, then push the rest of tasks to e-cores.

to be fair, many motherboards allow you to set a custom power envelope that it should NEVER exceed. You'll still get to see advertised boost clocks in a vast majority of scenarios in lightly threaded loads, but power and temps will be much more controlled such as in prime95

this is going to set gaming laptop sales going like it was "back in the day" or at least 2018;)
this and the 4080M are going to be killing it @ $2k-3k (depending on config)

Feels like someone sneezed and we reached 15. I remember it wasn't that long ago 11 series came out and it got slated. Then the 12 series got some momentum, then the 13 series a lot were jumping on big time. Now here we are 14 series.
