Still too far away. And nothing coming this year for 4K gaming on adequate price...

more like nothing coming new for improved 4k gaming period, I was hoping for a 1180 to provide 60+ fps in all current games at 4k maxed out

Exciting news! Ok, it's 2 years away, but NVidia & AMD will be no doubt wondering how Intel will fit into their market & what they're gonna do about it to secure/win their market share - I'd imagine it would make NVidia & AMD step up their game for 2020 (as much as they can within a 2yr time frame anyway).

I wonder what sort of tricks they are going to use to sell them to gamers. Since it's Intel, the cards won't be cheap, so that can't be the selling point. Maybe they will do something with their CPUs and mobos that will produce extra benefit from having an Intel CPU and GPU.

Oh, I know. It will only work with an Optane drive, and to unlock gaming mode you will need to purchase a dongle. And last but not least, you will need a new motherboard every two generations :p

Seriously now, this product is clearly for the data center market. I doubt a consumer part will be coming anytime soon.

    EDIT: Wrong thread!

there is already a 64 core chip called the Intel XEON Phi 7210

They already fked up the contract with the USA govt for pre-exascale supercomputer (Aurora) by being unable to deliver in 2018.
Despite that their contract was prolonged with the delivery date shifted to 2021.

Meanwhile IBM & Nvidia delivered as promised:
    https://www.hpcwire.com/off-the-wire/ornl-launches-summit-supercomputer/

So why is Intel still in the game for the exascale grant? Why not give everything to IBM & NV?
Because USA govt wants 2 or 3 distinct architectures with different technologies.

In case you wonder why post that ^^ in GPU thread, it's because Aurora failed on GPU front.

Remember 6-7 ago years when they rebooted Larabee under Phi/Knights branding and everyone was predicting Nvidia is finished in datacenters?
LOL other than in heavily subsidized supercomputers, Intel's manycore is nowhere to be found.

I don't expect this to have anything to do with Xeon Phi or Larabee project.

Most likely ground-up new design with some unknown knowledge... and that's why it will take another 2 years to get something out, there's a lot of work to do.
I am happy however, even if this is Intel. More competition and more choices are nice !

I remember the day when 3D was just starting, there were so many companies trying out... 3DFx, Nvidia, ATI, Matrox, S3, ATI, Rendition, PowerVR, SiS, 3DLabs, Tseng labs, Trident, Cirrus Logic ...
It's a sad affair today to see just a stagnant duopoly.

Three is already a party ;-)
    Bring it Intel !

"We hope for Intel that they will invest heavily in the software side of things as well -- The hardware is just one part of the recipe."

Could not agree more, this is so hugely important and often overlooked by hardware manufacturers... *Cough* sound cards.

Still doubt they'l be better than Nvidia, but more competition= needed!

Same, this is gunna be gooooood.

Intel has claimed they are doing this in the past. Every time it is smoke and mirrors. The boy has cried wolf again. I am not buying it.

Interesting, but there only can be two. out of the three only two will survive. Anyway, it would be nice if someone made new OS for PC giving MS run for its money.

Well Intel should have plenty of $ to invest in R&D. Raja certainly has some experience and knowledge, but since they can't copy AMD's designs due to copyright etc. it will be interesting to see how powerful of a GPU they can manage to produce in 2 years time.

I think its time for Nvidia to have some real competition. Lets face it AMD doing the job

Looking forward to it. Regardless of which company, we can see the impact that competition creates in a monopolistic market. I wonder if Intel GPU's will create that effect in the same fashion that Ryzen made on CPU market.
