I'm in the process of putting a list together for a new PC build. Which would be better to get? The I7 or I9. Is the ASUS MB worth getting?

Depends on what your budget is, which i7, which i9 and which Asus mobo you are referring to.

ROG or Maximus series. What is the best socket type to get? I used to have a I7 3770k, so I guess something like that. 250 mark would be ok for a CPU.

If you only PC game at 1920x1080 and do not want to break the bank, Intel is fine choice.

I would suggest CPU below-F/KF you need a dedicated GPU
    Core™ i5-10600
    Core™ i5-10600F
    Core™ i5-10600K
    Core™ i5-10600KF

I would suggest under $200USD Motherboard below-Just for PC gaming you do not need the best Motherboard.
    GIGABYTE Z490 VISION
    ASRock Z490 Steel Legend
    MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS
    GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS ELITE
    ASUS PRIME Z490-P
    ASRock Z490 Pro4

For Memory a cheap set of DDR4 CL16 3200Mhz 16GB kit-Any DDR4 will work but always check approved vendors list for memory for Motherboard
    G.SKILL Ripjaws V
    Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z
    G.SKILL Aegis 16GB
    G.SKILL TridentZ

If you do more than gaming, do not follow anything I said above. AMD CPU would be a better choice.
Also double check available slots for M.2/NVME drives and USB ports because the lower end Intel Motherboards may not be the best for what you all ready have.

Thanks, I'll have a look. It's mostly for work, but needs to be fast.

If it is for work ,then do not buy Intel CPU. AMD CPU are faster. IF you want some advice on AMD CPU then just put down a dollar value and I can suggest what to buy.

I am a bit of a diehard Intel fan when it comes to processors. But, I'm open to suggestions.

$400 I guess for the processor.

Wow that is a lot of money for a CPU, well for $400 you could get AMD 3900X 12core 24 thread CPU. Check out the Guru3d Review with the newest $500 Intel CPU

10900k review and then check the Cheaper AMD 3900X scores ,no contest

Also, you are a fan of their vulnerabilities and high temperatures?
Nowadays, AMD Ryzens the better choice in overall workloads, and Intel have a niche in some cases of gaming performance.

I am aware of them, yes. These days with the latest MB's and UEFI bios, it's not much to worry about.

Best to be a die hard of your own money wisely spent and of the best performance/money ratio.
    Never fails.
On the other hand, brands are often failing even their most zealous fans.
