i7 860 with 1.7vDimms

    Heya Guys

    I just upgraded tp an i7 setup and was using my old ram modules when i came across a thread saying vDimms over 1.7 can damage the cpu...

    What the ***k!

    Can some please explain this to me?

    Do i need new ram?

    Undervolt them?

    what to do...what to do.....WHAT TO DO!!

    the specification was indeed changed for the I series and Intel recommend only running up to 1.65v on the Ram voltage, they say anything over that could damage the CPU.

    you could run the ram at a lower frequency and voltage

    before i purchase ocz 3x2gb ram i use crucial ballistix 2x2gb for my i7 920,and ram volts 1,9 2v and no problems.1,7v is not bad.

    Your motherboard will run your memory modules at 1,5v by default either with high latencies or with low frequency. There's nothing to worry about but do not use your memory over 1,65 volts because of Intel's warning, it can damage the CPU memory controller. You can check your memory settings with CPU-Z to be sure anyway.

    I had a similar wake up call recently. Bought a new i7 860 and was using 1.9v ddr3 from my old rig for a few days...... Untill I woke up and realised 1.65v is the MAX u want to using. I ran the dimms at lower freq at 1.66v for a few days but in the end bought some new 1.65v stuff.

    Don't run it over 1.65v unless u like the smell of smoke !!!!
