    Their coolers are alligned differently

    gigabyte

    msi

As seen on the above Pictures, the gigabyte coolers fins goes across the Card - meaning the hot air will be blown out to the sides, and dumped inside the case. The msi coolers fins goes along the Card, meaning alot of the hot air will be blown out at the end of the Cards (meaning outside the case).

So as reviews also shows, the gigabyte has better direct gpu cooling, but the msi will dump less hot air inside your computer... so its a question of what you prefer really.

Pretty happy with my MSI. The fans don't spin unless I'm gaming. Load temps rarely go above 65 C (no overclock yet).

    .
I was going for the Gig G1 till i saw fan noise/heat at load video from
Computer base it helped me decide on going with the MSI 970

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmiVf9cmA9I

Take note of the temp/fan speeds in the background during the 2nd half of the video

Had mine for about 3 weeks now got it stable @ 1554Mhz core and 4001Mhz mem,i dont think ive seen it go over 62c/70% fan even at full load,so much much lower heat/noise than the 7970 it replaced.

only slight issue i have atm is with Sleep on the DVI-D (monitor will not wake till nu-plunged/re-plugged) so ive had to start using hibernation instead.

All vendors has their own odd issues... then you contact the manufacturer, and get it fixed. I had issues with my evga 780 ti's - contacted evga, and got it fixed.
