Given: X=0.9
Therefore, 10X=9.9 (slide the decimal over)

10X-X=9X
9.9-.9=9
9/9=1 END OF EQUATION
x=1 ??? You can't randomly throw X back in

The last line is the mistake... you can't plug X back in for no reason. When you substitute .9 for X in step 2, you removed X from the equation. Math is Correct because when substituting X, you get "9/9 = 1" which is mathematically sound.

Given x=4
x*2=8
4*2=8
8/8=1
x=1 WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG

WTF are you talking about buddy... the X stays there the whole time!!! Lemme give you a quote directly from that link:
The X does not just show up out of nowhere... it was there the whole time.

Boring is not reason for closure. As long as they are "on" topic, and are having.. fun, I see no reason to close it. Unless these guys just wanna keep discussing the same old problem which was solved, solved again, then explained and yet solved again pages back.

It's no discussion that needs to be held - get back on topic or it WILL get closed.

Yeah why are people bothering about this anyway, if they think its boring they could simply ignore it....

I still don't think that the Idea was that bad as many state here.

I found a simple explanation on a math page.....

Having lots and lots of fun as always, but this time I'm not going to put aside what I'm supposed to do: study. On day 15 of this month... I'm going to a party in a huge disco from 11 pm to 5 pm non-stop. If anyone wants to come to Spain that weekend... you can come to the party

'Ataboy! :thumbup:

As for the whole math thing... try paradox's. They are infinityl confusing. For example:

If the speed limit is pi (3.14........... ect)

Then once you reach 3 Km/h, you can continue to accelerate to 3.1 km/h. But then you can keep accelerating to 3.14 km/h, and so on and so forth in that fasion, meaning that you are infinitly accelerating. BUT you can never acctualy get to 4km/h.

That just confuses the hell out of me.

That's right on que.
In Quantum Physics, all is possible, and it is only by OUR power of perception, that it either exists or not.

Here's an old Proverb to contemplate:

The tree exists...
What defines the tree is the space that the tree is not.

What this is saying is that when you are looking at a tree, you are not looking directly at it, but are looking at the area that the tree does not occupy...which defines where exactly the tree is.

Something can be nothing at the same time, and vice versa...it's only when we put a label on it that it goes one way or another.

Isn't that why the Latins never had a symbol for zero? They believed that it simply doesn't exist so it can't be tangible in any way.
