So I'm running Firefox 3.5.4, and I had it sitting on my GMail and Facebook pages for a couple hours. I may have had Macrumors on a tab too, but I can't remember, because suddenly, the window closed and I was left with a simple dialogue box. "Your computer may have been infected by malware or spyware!" And there was an OK button, which of course I didn't press, and there was also a web address like "http://009.antivirus.something" I did NOT press the OK button in the window. Instead, I restarted the machine.
When I got back to the desktop, a balloon that usually pops up on the bottom right of the screen instead popped up on the top left...and when I re-opened Firefox it was a very tiny window that I had to expand.

I've begun scanning with PC Tools Threatfire/Antivirus, HijackThis, and Defender. We'll see what I come up with.

My question is, going by all those symptoms, did something really serious happen?

    Regards,

Looks like it, it probably exploited a security vulnerability. Did you update to 3.5.5 yet?

facebook is infected with a virus - something about reentering new password, just saw it few days ago on some media forum, it could be just that..

I checked for updates, and it tells me 3.5.4 is the latest version. Is there a standalone update I should be doing?

Yeah sorry about that, I misread the number of the latest update.

i've gotten this same dialog window too about some anti virus bs. at that point, i just kill firefox from the task manager. scanned with malwarebytes and defender, nothing comes up. i think as long as you don't click 'ok' on the popup dialog, the rogue anti virus software will not be installed. i've only encountered this with ff.

I have seen that before. It is a bad virus. Antivirus can not even detect it. Just rool your comp back to a previous point anad it will fix it.
