Hey, I am currently debating about getting into the Opteron club. Cos my local stores currently don't have 146s in stock, all I can get are cabne & cabye 144s. The seppings are fine, but it seems I cannot run my cpu at high chipset speeds on my board. Even though my K8N Neo2 P.E. supports HT speeds of up to 450, any attempts I tried with my current CPU to run around 300 MHZ HT (with low dividers and low mem settings of course, just to test) failed miserably. I already tried upping the vga-voltage as my mobo doesn't have individual chipset voltage. So how does it work? Is it pure luck? Am I missing something? As far as I understand it, it shouldn't make a diff if I run my setup @ 9x200 MHZ or 6x300 MHz, as long as I make sure the ram runs accordingly, right? Please help me out, I know those cabne Opterons will run 3GHz, but it's no use if I cannot crank up my bus-speed! Cheers!!!
Yeah, it runs @ 3x. All the common issues (vcore, vdimm, mem-settings, ht-multi, sata@3rd, pci-bus@66) have been covered. I just don't understand why I can't reach 300 when I can access numbers up to 450 MHz in the BIOS. Obviously, they put the option there for a reason? What's holding me back?
have you tried dropping the cpu multi to the lowest setting, just to see what you can do with the mobo? for i can get 320 some with my k8n neo2
As I said, me and cpu are all out of the equation! The last time I tried, I had ram running @ 200 (133x1,5) MHz and high timings, cpu was @ 5x300, i.e. stock clock. The result was an immediate blackscreen. Is there anything I can do to stabilize this? 320something ain't too shabby! Would allow me to run a good Opti @ 2.9 GHZ!
Another bios version could help. I remember reading a review of your mobo and theirs did 324 i believe. There must be something wrong.. I would try a different bios.
i really think it doesnt work like that though.. i can run 266 fsb all day even with 1:1 on the ram.. but if i run 300fsb say x8 cpu multi, and a nice divider to even keep it close to stock it locks up and i have to reset everything i tried even upping the volts but that didnt help.. i dont think that just cuz it has 450 means your mobo can push the 300fsb.. maybe on a top of the line DFI this is possible i know i tried evrything i could to get it to boot at 280 on a 4:3 ram and x8 multi which would be ddr420 and 2.2 ghz still couldnt get it to boot.. my htt though has no mutli option just pick from 1000-800 etc and i left it at 1000 cuz it automatically calculates
I just ran some more tests with another bios (v1.9) and still no difference in sight! My mobo locks up on anything beyond 282 MHz. I'm coming to terms with the idea that texanterror was right and my mobo probably doesn't do more. What a shame! Byebye, Opteron@3GHz dreams! Unless, of course, somebody here would know how to voltmodd my mobo to give the chipset some more juice?
That would be a nf3 correct? Mine on s754 tops out at 350-ish. Your way arround it would be nf4. And yes, there are plenty of mods for that board (I can look for the mod)
I've just read through a host of Neo2 info over at www.xtremesystemforums.org and it seems as though depending on the age of oyur chipset, some board top out around 280 (Taiwanese chipset) whereas the rest does 300+ easily (Korean chipset). I did find a rather complicated mod that is supposed to increase the chipset voltage, but it was rather obscure and look very certain to destroy the mobo. Any medium-skill mods would be appreciated!
Texan is joining me with my DFI and Opty 146 ^^ I get the cpu tomarrow I am so wondering what steping I am going to get. BTW Dune what local store has those cpus? most online retailers have them backorderd as far as the eye can see, wich really sucks because you have no idea what steping you will get, Id grab a 144opty with cabne in a second! I dont think they make that steping any more! not to mention the 144 is a decent 50$ cheaper than a 146. In fact pm me the price for the 144 I might just buy it lol thats like finding a diamond in the rough.
