Thermal compound is a must. Arctic Silver is highly recomended. After that there are a ton of fans to choose from. Don't be cheap, this is what keeps your chip cool and helps it to last. A shim is a good idea as well, it will prevent you from accidentally crushing the chip.

Copper spacers are good for protecting your cpu from being crushed, but they also dont let heat disipate very well (keeps heat in). I have installed alot of heatsinks on socket a cpus, and by far the best way to go is a swiftech mc370. Check one out and you will see that they dont use the typical clip. Right now I am using one w/ a ys tech 26 cfm fan, 1.33 gig tbird @ 1540 mhz, and my temp right f**in now is 26C.

And I agree, artic silver II is the way to go. Just make sure it is very very thin on both the core and the heatsink. Too thick of an appication can work against you.

While I agree that the swiftech is really good, I disagree it is the best. According to the last results I looked at the best is an ocz Gladiator. Seems to out perform the swiftech in a back to back comparison. (dont have the pages habdy so you'll have to so some searchin to find the testing) I comes in 2 flavors, one with a better fan. That one was not tested so it should perform even better. Check it out!
I didnt day the mc 370 was the best at cooling, It is the best for easy mounting. It does a good job of cooling, better than most.
I'm gonna have to rap my knuckles each time I say artic silver and mean arctic silver 2. Ya get the point. There are plenty of reviews on active heat sinks around. I suggest you read them. Some make a lot of noise and you may not want that. Others don't do a good job, avoid that.
