I'm turning 36 in a few weeks here (4/23) and for the last year I have become obsessed with aging. Now, for the "all knowing elitists" that flow through this part of the forum let me state, I UNDERSTAND THINKING AND OBSESSING DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING, IT'S JUST A PART OF BEING *GASP* HUMAN. Sorry I can't ignore my humanity and instincts through ignorance like some of us. Getting that obvious trolling out of the way... What age do you guys feel is old? A friend of mine and myself both feel after 62, you slow down. If you look at people, something happens after that 62 point. The skin deteriorates faster, bones become misshapen and mobility starts to become noticeably harder....again...I understand there are exceptions...but majority, it would seem, is 62 before the body starts to say done. In some it may be sooner, others later, but 62 seems like a safe place to assume. I never thought once about age until about a year ago. Hitting 35 made me realize I was going to be closer to 40 after that day....and 40 has always had that stigma of "middle aged" that I think may be starting to be pushed back a bit as our average life expectancy has been raised here in the US at least, to 76 (Not sure about your respective, countries). So the way I'm seeing things now. Your mid life starts around 45-48 depending on health, fitness, active lifestyle, etc. And your end life starts around 62-65. Be it you may live another 30 years in the end life stage, end life simply means it's the last quarter of your life. Do you fear aging? What ages do you guys feel are mid life and end life cycles? Interested in getting peoples perspectives. Please keep the convo's civil. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't make them wrong or you right. Let's respect each others opinions. The internet is filled with enough hate and fighting...forums too. Lets be the exception.
How can anyone possibly know when they have less years ahead of them though? For instance, my mom died at 41. Hard to think at 20 and a half she was thought of as middle aged?
I started feeling old when I hit 30, no longer in my 20s, but now 38 tbh I don't feel any different to when I was 28 other than it takes longer to recover from a drinking sesh, and sitting cross legged on the floor I think it's all relative to what age you are and how you feel, kids think 20 year olds are old, 20 year olds think 40 year olds are old and 40 year olds think 60 year olds are old
And I understand the state of mind. I do. I hope if I live to be 80 or 90 I can still have a sense of humor and look at things with a decent view still. But even if your mind is "young", your body cannot keep up with such. The body breaks down regardless to your mental state. So personally, that's why I am asking that question. But I do understand your point there. Age is an attitude to a point, certainly.
Well taking into account you die by old age of course. You can't foresee death by a car crash Yep. Personally I'll probably feel old when I a. can't get around easy(movement) or b. start to lose my mind(forgetful) There are plenty of 70 years who are quick thinkers and get around fine but technically they are old but still. Age is how you feel. If i am 70 and can move and think like a 30 year old I won't 'feel' old.
I have a friend that felt old the day after he hit 21 lol. He claims after that, it's all adulting and hard roads. I disagree, but I do see his point. I feel like you in the sense of where I am now. Actually, at almost 36, I feel better now than at 26. Due to being 98% more active, being more into fitness, dieting, cutting out red meat, quitting drinking, etc. I feel much better. I get mistaken for being in my late 20's often which makes me feel good, but at the end of the day, regardless to how young you look, the ticker in the chest doesn't give two sh*ts LOL. Age being relative has crossed my mind often. Like you said, at 20, I thought 35 year olds were old. Now, I think 62 is old. Lol.
Heck Yea I look Good!....I can't even go to walmart with out getting raped by really fine women....Bitches love Me!......
Interesting question. How old is old, the question is quite vague. I don't think one should equal age with their body's health. Bodies of 30-40 year old wrestlers, boxers or martial art artists sometimes give up early, would that mean they are as old as a late 60s person whose body has started giving up? Sometimes elderly peoples' body don't give up, plain and simple, does that mean they are still young? (Just pointing out how ambiguous it is) It is also a very subjective question, age is relative. Are we talking 'old' from a biological point of view or a cultural point of view? A 7 year old would likely call a 24 year old 'old' while a 40 year old would call him young. It differs from people to people based on experience, sometimes cultural values, on one's personal criteria of what constitutes 'being old'. Just the other day a co-worker aged 60 called a 40 something year old person 'very young', for me that's not 'VERY young'. How old is old? There is not one answer as the question would imply (chances are you didn't mean it like that anyway). I would rephrase it to "How old would you say is 'old'", and let the abundance and variety of answers flow in.
Physically, mentally or both? Biologically your body starts changing after 25. Around 30 one begins to shrink, height wise. Mental aging is different for everyone. 54 today and feel no different physically or mentally than when I was in my thirties. Will not start feeling old till my mobility is significantly affected and/or my memory starts to fail me. Till then, it's pedal to the metal. Still pull all nighters for various reasons and still bounce back after the next night's sleep. Wife thinks I'm nuts but says it's not fair at the same time. She is a person who needs eight hours sleep or is battling a headache for lack thereof. You're still a pup as my parents would say EDIT: Wait till AARP hits you up for membership near your 50th. Freaky how they have it timed and how they get their information.
This is a great response. Thank you. I enjoyed reading this. Ironically enough, AARP accidentally sends me stuff every few years lol! Nice to read at 54 you feel the same as you did in your 30's. I suppose I'm asking more in the physical sense, about age. Of how limited/limiting one becomes.
66 now and in better shape than 20 years ago (got rid of 35 kg fat). Still playing with slot cars, keeps reflexes up and my mind young - racing abroad too.
Not sure who said it first but look at aging as entering one's metallic years. Silver in your hair rust in your joints lead in your bottom
