A 9800pro is idd a very handsomely priced secondhand card, but putting that in a pentium 3 would be like sticking a V8 in a Lada, overkill in its purest sense.

@scoutingwraith: The conroe is indeed a new architecture, which seems like precisely the reason to buy one imo. Acoording to their roadmap, AMD will not be releasing any new architecture before the conroe appears. Also, most of the mid-end Conroe cpu's actually smoke an fx-60 (which costs more than my pc as a whole), can't seem to go wrong with those :)

You cant go by 3dmark, its a good reference but only games with tell the truth about the card. My 5900xt modded with 5950 bios killed a 6200 in the real world....

Noooooo.... you dont wait till something comes out to buy it....yeah why not pay top dollar for it...

No, you wait till its been out awhile and save half the price!!! Why would buy something when it firsts comes out?? What if it doesnt work?? What if all the new video cards dont work on dx10?? Ive saved thousands by waiting a little and not going crazy and preordering or buying the thing the day it comes out... how stupid!!!

Wow a new processor for $500!!! ohhh good deal, two months after it comes out it wil be $350.... just wait and get a good price on it....

Yeah, i wouldn't suggest buying a 6200 right now... Your 5700 should at perform at a similar level, anything higher than that is overkill for the p3 neway. If you really intend on a decent, good-priced card, an ati x1300(pro) performs at about 9800 pro level w/ sm3 and avivo...

FX 5200 can be unlocked easily, most of the times. But still it is not good to compare it with FX5700!!
5700 was the first card of its own kind, with new features and overclocking potentials, that 5200 can not possess.
Though the performance can be minute if there is proper modding of the FX 5200,done.
But still i would say, FX5700 can make your games run at higher settings in comparison to FX5200.

    thanks.

Again, specs dont mean everything either. We all know what the cpus are doing now, they are slowing down on mhz but computing faster.

Your chart shows a 5900xt has twice the bandwidth of a 6600gt and we all know that the 6600gt is almost double the performance over a5900xt

    GeForce FX 5900 XT
    390 MHz
    680 MHz
    256-bit
    21.7 GB/s

    GeForce 6600 GT
    500 MHz
    1 GHz
    128-bit
    16 GB/s

The clock speed doesnt mean that much either, my 5900xt was clocked 500/800

And the 6800 gs is underclocked from the 6600gt but the 6800gs is way better ive had them both...

    GeForce 6800 GS
    425 MHz
    1 GHz
    256-bit
    32 GB/s
    12

Stay away from that 7300gs it has only 4 pixels per clock...

There is no unlock for FX5200.

6600GT is nothing even close to double the performance of an FX5900xt.

The 6800GS IS a much better card than either of them, though.

The guys specs are changing to a64 3200+ sjeesh read the posts!!!!

The 6800gs would match a 3200+ perfectly, the 7900gtx would be nice with a 4000+ combo.....

Why buying a 6800GS if 7600GT is on the line and not that expensive? (assuming the thread starter switch a64 3200+)

yeah, last time i looked the 7600gt was another $50, but when i had the 6600gt, the 6800gs was another $50 so for me it would have been another $100 to get the 7600gt and the 6800gs and the 7600gt are very close in benchmark numbers on REAL games not 3dmark.....

What in the hell?? i thought the prices were going down due to the new cards out....so far they have gone up...

I got my 6800gs for $150 now they are $185, my 6600gt for $99, now are $119 and the 7600gs was $200 now its $124!!! damnit!!! i should have waited and got the 7600.....

Well the best thing 4 months ago when i got my 6800gs it was the best bang for buck, now its the 7600gs....

Hmm.... i just did some research and aparantly the 7600gs is worse than 6600gt......huh....

Bah, the difference between a 4000+ and a 3200+ will hardly be noticeable on the high resolutions you would want to play with on a 7900 GT... Even on lower settings there's a max. 5-10 % bottleneck. Will be 70% increase in performance for like 30% extra cost. Not that a 7600GT is bad tho :)

Why do people think if you have the latest video card you play at super high resolutions?? Ive tried that and the words in the chat or message get so small you cant read them.....

If i get the lastest video card i will play a game that will utilize it, not up the res so i cant see stuff anymore......

My 3500+ venice is pegged at 100% the whole time running bf2, i think the 4000+ could help out some......esp with more rendering and textures working....

No matter what i play at 1024x768

yes yes but how many pixel and vertex has a 5700 ultra ???? how many transistors ??? how many ROPs ???? I don't really thing in ANY way the only thing that counts is gpu frecv. and mem frecv. ... So any 5xxx can't stand a change in front of an 6600 or 6600gt ...

every CPU you'll have (single core) will be at 100% when playing games ...
