Yeah good question, think I can only count on one or two hands the number of games I've completed in my collection.. get stuck playing just a select few most of the time.... :bang:

Not sure if having so many games is something to be proud of, Actually i'm not very proud at all of how many games i've purchased in my lifetime, but whatever. What i have now is a fraction of what i've had over the past 30 years, so no clue.

Well, in perfect honesty, I usually do complete a game before trying something else, but I was mostly just curious; wondering how weird I was I guess. ;)

I'm not entirely sure how many I have. Many have been impulse buys for under $10 that I play for a short while then lose interest. I'd say it's somewhere around 400-500 or so though as it stretches back around 20 years or so, from Math Blaster to Terraria to... many others. Steam has made impulse buys a much more pleasant experience, though I've done it with GFWL too. Bought Age of Empires III complete for $0.11 when they did that insane special on it a while back.

I would imagine the pride comes from having bought rather than pirated the games. I do agree however, having so many games only shows how much time and money we waste that could be spent much more constructively.

The same could be said of any hobby really, though. Some people spend thousands a year on their cars, others on paint and canvas, while others on wood and tools. Is buying a game a month really all that bad? Some people buy plastic figurines of characters of television shows and will spend fortunes doing so. I just don't understand this mindset of not only feeling guilty about situations beyond one's control, but trying to guilt others into the same feelings. I'm not saying you're doing that, I've just heard that argument used to do so many times before. My uncle in particular does it, and he spends most of his time off work watching television. A certain level of hypocrisy is often not far behind guilters and their arguments.

Just because 'we all do it' doesn't make it right, either.

Also, I wouldn't rank buying certain expensive items, or even classic cars for that matter, which either take up very little time or have actual practical use and value as being on the same level as playing hundreds of games that take up thousands of hours of time spent sitting in front of a screen.

It's also entirely within our control to choose how we spend our time and money. Spending some of that time with family, playing actual sport or on other hobbies and social interactions would be a lot healthier, both physiologically as well as psychologically. This might be a gaming forum but I would think that we are all mature enough to agree on the above regardless of what other actual or perceived vices we may or may not have.

My original comments weren't meant to be directed at anybody either, they were just a reflection of the kind of questions we should really be asking ourselves. The same would apply if it was thousands of hours spent in front of the TV or anything else that may start to become less than 'constructive'.

I would also suggest reading up 'Ad hominem'.

I knew you'd be one of those guys with thousands of games! A bit like AVGN.

Also, I have played Farm Simulator and enjoyed it somewhat :D

Entertainment is just that, entertainment. It doesn't matter if it's not "productive" in a traditional sense. No man is a machine, we all need entertainment to survive. Other hobbies are simply a matter of preference. The argument that gaming is for socially backwards individuals doesn't hold water anymore either because multiplayer gaming is king at this point in time.

So basically, gaming is one of the "unhealthier" hobbies in the sense that you need to supplement it with physical activity, but trying to claim it's not on the same level as other hobbies is silly.

The argument was that excessive gaming ceases to be constructive. Any comparison with other activities was made around the notion of excessiveness. I even provided multiple examples to clarify this.

Avoiding the actual argument and fabricating viewpoints which were never made like "gaming is for socially backwards individuals" isn't very intelligent nor mature and becomes purposefully argumentative. This wouldn't be the first time I've pulled you up on this either.

I should also make it clear that 'constructive' is not the same as 'productive', and they are not even remotely synonymous when used in the context of 'excessive behaviour'. Constructive implies the activity or action can lead to an improvement and is the opposite of destructive; this is something that tends to be true more often than not when considering excessive behaviour. Productive on the other hand implies producing something, like goods or services. Expecting material gain from playing computer games has no relation to the argument and probably goes beyond "silly". :)

As many people have shown in the past decade: you only need ONE single game, like World of Warcraft, and any random person who never gamed before in his/her life can suddenly become a game addict. Maybe organize some activity on the side...anyway, collecting is perfectly normal human behavior. Games have never been cheaper in sales everywhere so collections can grow easily. I have a bunch of them too, hundreds even, but luckily steered clear of any console.

I envy people who have constructive type hobbies. Building things with wood, making your house and property look really nice with attention to detail, things that have use and practicality, Things you can share with other people.
Painting and spending for you car are at least something others can see and enjoy as well. Gaming is rather a self indulgence of personal entertainment, its not a bad hobby, but not really a hobby of pride imo.
Not sure if television could be considered an actual hobby, more like a way to kill time, Hobbies are usually defined as an interest where one becomes a specialist in knowledge and experience, though i guess TV Trivia is that.
