what benefits and disadvantages are there to running xp at 64 bit?generally for gaming.thanks
the only game with performance increase i've noticed is on far-cry, it increased my fps by about 20 and allowed me to put all settings on max in game as well as on my card, the performance increase was amazing, i gained about 20fps or so as well as max settings, average about 50 fps
far cry has a 64 bit patch with a few new multiplayer levels...half life 2 seems to have missing textures after the update, i didn't notice any performance increase, although i've heard of no probs with some, i guess chronicles of riddick and a few other games have 64 bit patches as well
i've been running 64bit for about three months now and have occasional issues but nothing major
im dual booting with xp home, i have only been running xp64 for about 2 weeks so not actually mr experienced yet. can say it seems to boot up faster, ( i reinstalled xp home at the same time) also games and apps load faster playing Battlefield2 online, i often seem to be on the maps before any other. player. drivers and software have not been an issue except for Far Cry which i cant get the 64 bit patch to install ( error 1628 installation not complete). i have done a reinstall but this didnt solve the problem. also no drivers for my hp printer or scanner, but i might try the 32 bit and see what happens, sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. fairly happy with it so far
running Battlefield2, Far Cry, Winamp, Outlook 2003,Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8, Windvd4, Google earth, Opera browser, Xfire, Teamspeak, just taking my time installing stuff, but hope to get away from 32 bit eventually
further to that i had a look around about my problem with Far Cry, and all is solved, just searched for the error message and microsoft had the answer. now im a happy bunny
i just ran 64bit for 3days and its a horrid little OS, torrents were slow, some games wont install, internet slow one minute ok next, it just seems to me that nobody is intrested in x64, i just hope vista turns out to be ok, but i bet it will be same as because Vista is coming out in both 32bit and 64bit, so i bet the 32bit vista will be better once again.
im dual booting xp pro and x64, have been for about two months, i have noticed also that the usual boot up and shut down is a lot faster, some games it seems to make a world of difference wit, farcry being my personal favourite. the 64 bit content rocks!
however some games do not show any improvement at all. some even run worse!!
cant get on the web with it as i have a crappy usb modem which sucks.
i originally installed it to play farcry64 and hoping to use it as a standalone o/s however the general lack of interest by companies and the lack of information about it put me straight off that idea!
i hope they sort there act out for vista!!
good for a dual boot to show off your 64 bit power to your mates or even just cos we can! alas tis not the replacement i was hoping for.
dual boot and find out, what have you got to loose??
my mate runs it on its own and he loves it! (i think thats just because it still *smells new*!)
i just built this system....
a week ago... some of my games wont install mostly old ones. unreal 1 quake 3 arena etc. it is a very stable operating system. i had been running xp pro 32 bit for years but am undecided about 64 bit.
Windows 64-bit needs found here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=141658
I just about 5 minutes ago added a section about gaming in there Q13
i hope that helps
I used to run Windows x64 until just reciently i got a new mobo and i lost my cd
should have done some research
and ive never had that problem with the internet as you are talking about
it must have been just you
Once Vista comes out i will be back on 64-bit because by then most everything will run on 64-bit
Dont need to, it just came out and is not yet fully supported software wise.
How many will jump right in and get vista when it comes out? Not me!
Best thing is to wait till its fully supported or else all you do is hit those roadblocks we call bugs!
I'll second that.
We'll all be going 64 bit in the end, little doubt about it, advantages over 32bit are huge. At present the implimentation is really only for industry/servers and those with specialist needs. Vista is a completely different beast from the current 64 bit windows - and MS cant afford it to be a failure, Industry will decimate MS revenues if its a flop. Initially they will concentrate on Industry needs, so give it circa 6 months or so post release, then start thinking about moving over to it.
It'll happen this time, just a question of timing.
I dont use X64.
I did for a bit but when i went to play FEAR it ran slow for me and kinda skippy. So i went back to Win XP Pro SP2 and have had 0 problems.
My biggest problem.... no NERO InCD!
Furthermore I exclusively use x64 now... Only hiccups are "lack" of Anti-Virus (decent ones at least), no 16bit support and no Alcohol 120%....
Oh yes... Lego Star Wars demo does not support my OS!
