Shale pollutes more than coal or natural oil, so you are further speeding up global warming. So is it really a viable source to use on a mass scale on a ever increasing longer life?

Actually there is. The current population load is only supported by the massive use of petrochemicals, particularly in fertilizers never mind it's other uses in production and distribution. As everyone should know, oil is a finite resource and there is no replacement.

you know global warming is a myth right? it's not warming up so now it's climate change, more ambiguous term for a fundraiser...

Really hate listening to kids/teens talk on subjects like this - put this goon first in line or watch him sheepishly sidestep the line after he hits 40.

£20 he gonna keep quiet next time this comes up when he hits late 30's or early 40's

Seriously I may actually have an opinion but it's pointless sharing it with a kid - you can't teach experience.

The OP is studying for a master's in anthropology....not exactly something a "kid" would do.....

No real need for you to be a d-bag though.....or for you to derail this thread.

I'm younger than this guy. I'm a few years more than half your age, actually. Age is irrelevant.

Heck, my 6-year-old penis :3eyes: sometimes logs in to post something.

    numnuts? StealBalls, man, StealBalls.

They will achieve it one day, humans will be able to live for all eternity..... my question is why would you actually want to live forever?

By all means however adding an extra 50-100yrs to my life span would be kinda nice.

Seeing as how I can barely afford to eat as an Anthropology major in a society that only values people who major in Nursing or Accounting, I am quite ok with dying at 75, as I don't want stomach pangs forever, I only eat organic, and unfortunately that is expensive. I only eat grass fed beef as well, also expensive, corn fed beef is a sin against life.

If you want to extend that life, enjoy that corn, erm I meant beef. ;p

The tech is there it just needs to mature. More energy efficient house hold electronics and more efficient use of solar and wind energy. I could see at some point in the future your shingles on you home actually being solar cells all connected to a battery backup reserve about the size of as a 40gal. water heater. No longer having your home connected to the mains totally off the grid. Coal and other methods of creating energy would be reduced and only really be used for backup.

I guess that is possible loophole, feel free to close this thread, I was only curious and glad to see I was able to trigger a back and forth discussion, only one d-bag the entire time. xD Not bad.

You know there is a difference between climate and weather right? Climate is a chaotic system, if you add more energy to it, a net warming in effect the weather produced is more changeable and extreme in both directions, hotter in some places and colder in others. Whether or not you believe human industrialisation has played a significant role, it's hard to deny the physical impact at the ice sheets and the significant trend over the last century.

Personally I trust the scientists involved; knowing the peer review process and intense scrutiny from politics and business interests and the portion of the population they have been able to convince. As yet they have been unable to put forward a compelling argument to counter the current model of understanding. Science is a process not a dogma, discovering a flaw in the current understanding of a field is something that scientists strive for, to me it seems absurd they would attempt a conspiracy as some suggest. I'm not going to bother responding to anyone's response to this post, people don't like it when someone disagrees with their opinions. Yes this is my opinion but it is also the opinion of the scientific community which I believe to be more valid than that of the layman.

As for the problem of overpopulation, the earth has finite resources, it cannot support continual population growth indefinitely and we should attempt to transition to zero-growth or growth moderated by advances technology. A meaningful investment in technology particularly in energy storage, desalination, nuclear fusion and as a stop-gap Thorium molten-salt micro reactors would go a long way in securing our species' future.

Going back to the original topic, I'm sure many of us would agree that extension of life isn't really what we want, we want an improved quality of life.

And if we do, will we have the necessary intelligence to handle millions of years of memories and experiences?

EDIT: This reminds me of my favorite short story by Isaac Asimov, "The Last Question". I recommend reading it, it's fascinating.

seems like this kind of topic is becoming more relevant, i personally dont have plans for death really :p i got a bunch of possible solutions that most likely will work out by the time i get older, and if everything fails this could help http://alcor.org/

Sorry if I misjudged you - thought you was an annoying teenager who was yet to truly empathize with the older generations - something that can only be when faced down with ones own mortality.

People laugh at the money spent on space travel, yet if we got our asses in gear and invested in the colonization of other planets, a large number of earthly problems would be solved.....

And a whole bunch of new ones introduced but, fk that scheisse that's just called progress.
