how can I tell if my laptop has a ata6 or ata150 hard drive? thanks
There's no such thing as ATA-150, except you mean SATA. ATA by itself refers to IDE drives. See the bottom of this article for a small comparison chart:
If you tell your laptop model we can find what type of hard disk you have. Also, what operative system are you using?
my laptop is a toshiba satellite model#m45-s2652.
According to the specifications, your laptop has an IDE drive. To check if Windows is using it at maximum speed, right-click on My Computer --> Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right-click on each IDE channel and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and check that DMA mode is enabled. Below there's a field saying the current ATA mode.
