how can I tell

    how can I tell if my laptop has a ata6 or ata150 hard drive? thanks

    There's no such thing as ATA-150, except you mean SATA. ATA by itself refers to IDE drives. See the bottom of this article for a small comparison chart:

    If you tell your laptop model we can find what type of hard disk you have. Also, what operative system are you using?

    my laptop is a toshiba satellite model#m45-s2652.

    According to the specifications, your laptop has an IDE drive. To check if Windows is using it at maximum speed, right-click on My Computer --> Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right-click on each IDE channel and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and check that DMA mode is enabled. Below there's a field saying the current ATA mode.
