    Hi guys,

I contemplate upgrading my graphics card from a MSI GeForce GTX 660 TwinFrozr III either to the MSI GeForce GTX 760 HAWK or the ASUS Radeon R9-280X DirectCU II TOP.

    I game at 1920x1080.

Which one is the better option?

    Thanks in advance!

The r9 280x has +1 GB VRAM, that can count if you apply AA

    the 760 can do easily bf4 at 1080, you could get a 4gb version, or wait on 4gb 960 /960ti /965ti.

BF4 is heavy CPU bounded on multiplayer, not a good example

Just wanted to specify that my choice is STRICTLY between the two mentioned cards.

    i've owned a 760 hawk, they're lovely cards, if it's for bf4 you'll be fine.
personally i'd never go amd so just wanna say that.

then go for the R9 280X
    More VRAM
    More memory bandwith 288000 MB/ against 144192 MB/sec /100 %/
    More Mtexels/sec 108800 Mtexels/sec against 78400 Mtexels/sec /39%/

But.... twice power comsumption /250W against 140W

    :)
Me neither but just wanted to see which one of these two will deliver the best bang for the buck.

What sort of performance gain in % should I expect from the 760 Hawk compared to my current 660?

    Nothing wrong with that.
It's just that between those 2 cards, numbers are better for the AMD.
    Then, personal preferences apply......

    Hmmm,sounds tempting.

I'm guessing a performance boost over my current 660 of 40-50%. Is this correct or not?

    In theory, yes.

But in theory, comunism works as well.

    Depends on the whole rig.

thos numbers are absolulte comparison, you need to take into account your machine (RAM,OS,HDD speed, CPU, the games you play, etc).

But yes, the gain should be higher with the R9.......

BTW, that % does not mean direct relation to frames per second........
Milleage may vary in terms of the games you play.......

You can see my rig in my updated signature.

I tend to play mostly shooters and stealth games.

Right now I'm playing Metro Redux, Thief, Far Cry 4, Bioshock Infinite.

This upgrade has more to do with future-proofing my GFX card than the actual need to upgrade it due to lack of performance.

    This can help you :

As you will see, then in real life, differences are not that big between them.
Future proof is not gonna happen with any of those cards.

(google translate or just look at the graphs).

/edit there si something odd with those tests... might be driver related....
anyways, spect little diff in frames per second.

    Thanks for the link!

Let me explain my situation: I do relatively small upgrades every 2-3 years and I have someone who buys back my GFX card and I only pay the price difference.

In this particular case I can get either the 760 Hawk or the R9 280X for the same amount.

This is why I wanted to know which was the better choice.

    1) the R9 should be chepaer.....
    2) you'll get , let's say 5 to 30 more fps WITH a nice amount of AA (that you cannot do right know.....)

So.... you'll be getting a bit of better performance, more stability and the possibility of nicer graphics.

as for the nvidia/amd clan wars...........
Well, Once you set up everything, and just care about gaming you'll be fine both ways.

    R9 280X is 2 generations old.
GTX760 is also 2 generations old.

The term "future proof" should not be used with either card at this point seeing as, in reality, they've already been superseded.

The R9 280X was originally marketed as the HD7970. The GTX760 was essentially the GTX670. You'd be better off saving up some money and going for something current gen.

If you absolutely must "upgrade" to a previous gen card, your best option is the R9 280X/HD7970 and OC like hell.

280x is marginally faster than the 760 and has more vram so I'd go for that
