Do the current models of NVIDIA cards (the 900 series) actually already support HDMI 2.0a? Or will it be possible to update them via software to that?

What do you need from HDMI 2.0a?

    4K/60?

    Software?

No way to "convert" a HDMI 1.4 in 2.0 you need the hardware...

...but there is possibility to have HDMI 2.0 from a DisplayPort 1.2 output with this active DispalyPort 1.2 adapter to HDMI 2.0:

    DisplayPort™ 1.2 to HDMI™ 2.0 4K60Hz UHD Active Adapter

Model is CAC-1070 don't mistake with other nomenclatures...

Still on backorder on all the web stores i look, the cost will be around 50 euros (50 US$ ?).

I'm waiting for this toy to be avalaible.

    :)

With latest gen of the Samsung UHD TVs (8 and 9 series) they added HDMI 2.0a as a firmware update, to support HDR.

    http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_2_0/hdmi_2_0a_faq.aspx

but if you check link above it says "
Will HDMI 2.0a require special hardware support or is this a firmware/software only upgrade?
This is dependent on manufacturers and their system designs. Please contact the manufacturers for detail of their system designs and upgradability."

So kinda unclear, best would be to contact NVidia about it.

I personally think it will be a software update to the drivers at some point.
