Okay so it's gonna be a while, but the Advanced Storage Technology Consortium (ASTC), consisting out of parties like  HGT, Seagate and WD, states that storage density expand 10 times by the year 20...

I'm not sure if I would be still interested in mechanical HDD's 10 years from now even for storage purposes because it's obvious that mechanical HDD's can keep up anymore or gain much more speed in the future paired with future (even current) lightning speed CPU's and everything else.

If SSD technology can't mature enough and becomes cheaper so that everyone can own affordable 5 to 10TB SSD in their HTPC/business/gaming rig 10 years from now then... then I don't know what to say.

Good point, i think maybe we can see affordable 2 TB SSDs in next two years, but i'm not an expert.

100TB... TBH I'm not sure if I would ever need so much storage space as long as I live. Dozen of HTPC's & gaming rigs with HDD's/SSD's inside in my house together with NAS storage are something around 15 to 16TB and more than 1/2 of that space is unused. Few dozens of games in my kids gaming rigs, huge collection of personal pics and videos, I don't watch/collect movies/porns - I like to do that live :D... and I should be just fine with rest of free HDD/SSD storage space in my house for another 5, 10, maybe even 15 years from now.

But I'm sure out there 10, 15 years from now there will be enough Virtual/3D porn movies collectors with need for huge amount of storage space, 100TB, 200TB of space, meh, even that wouldn't be enough for them :)

Yuck, you watch porn. Gross. TBH, I presume there will be 16k screens by then, thats 36 megapixel per frame. A single movie would be around 1/2 TB. That would be 200 movies on 100TB drive.

lol, I barely even watch TV, maybe few hours a week after work (mostly Discovery Channel and National Geographic), can't remember last time I've watched some movie or porn on my TV/PC. When I want to watch some movie I go to cinema with my wife and/or kids, since I was kid I've always loved cinema much more than watching movies on small CRT/LCD screen, feeling is just too much different for me. But few of my friends are movies/porn maniacs, their HDD's are almost always full of those stuff, all of them are married (and their wifes know about that), I don't understand  Maybe it's about a time for me to start watching porns again like I've used to to that when I was younger, much younger and bring something new into my bed :D

    edit
Recently I've "discovered" Popcorn Time for my kids: they love it, huge collection of old and latest cartoons, movies for kids, I guess stuff for adults can be found there also :), great quallity (720p, 1080p)... With Popcorn Time who need so much storage space for huge movies/porn collection when everything is just few clicks away. But even with Popcorn Time cinema is stil my No.1.

Well some new games take 50GB hard drive space, 10 years ago the newest games needed 2GB, thats 25 times as much. So its possible in another 10 years a new game may need over 1TB of disc space.

^lol 1tb per game that would be sick, internet speeds are the main drawback imo

I've learned never to say things like that about tech - about 18-20 years ago I knew someone with a 10GB HDD, and I said the same thing

It's all relevant, as net speeds increase, games get more complex and much bigger, movies start getting released in 24k or whatever 10 years from now will bring, - 100TB HDDs might not seem so big by then

I dont see Mechanical HDD lasting that long unless they find way to significantly increase there speeds,

Even the fast hdd atm are system bottlenecks. Like others have said, IF we dont have affordable SSD by then we got problem

I know what you mean, just to refresh everyones memory here with famous Bil Gates words: "640 k ought to be enough for anybody" :)

Speaking for myself... As time passes and I'm geting older, pardon, leveling up, I become more and more modest in my demands, especially for space I use to storage my personal things like personal photos, videos, documents etc. I don't game much these days, haven't watched/downloades movie from internet for ages (at least 10 years) and my needs for personal storage space are getting smaller as time passes. I have maybe 3 or 4TB of personal documents, photos and videos (kids, family, weddings, birthdays, scaned pics from childhood ...) on home NAS and that's all. The rest of 11, maybe 12TB of home storage space is spreaded across many HTPC's and gaming rigs and noone at home is complaining (yet) that he lacks of free storage space on his rig. I highly doubt I will use more than aditional 10 or 20TB on NAS in next 20 or 30 years. Just for example my main HTPC for Skype, surfing, e-mail I'm siting in front of it right now has 60GB SSD and 320GB HDD and I'm more than happy with it. There is more than 200GB of space available on HDD, and more than 30GB of free space on SSD and it's been that way in at least past 3 years.

But who knows, maybe 5 or 10 years from now my wife dumps me and I will be forced to buy 50TB NAS to download a lot of porns and satisfy my needs :D

You say that now, but I remember my old 286 machine has a 100MB harddrive and I thought I would NEVER use it all. Blu-Ray's will be old news at that point and there will probably be some new disc that can hold 1TB or more.

Well if games keeping up with the 50gb sizes, in 3~4 years we might have 100gb games soon. that uncompressed audio is a killer

I would love to see some massive HDDs, this would mean I could rip Blurays to my HDD and have them totally uncompressed, rather than the compressed formats I have to have now.

Tbh i'm not even sure if having it uncompressed is that much of a gain in terms of video and audio quality ... but damn it, it's the principle of the matter.

Or even worse: 100TB HDD full of personal memories burned by electric surge, I would drop dead immediately... :( Cheap cloud storage, here I come...
