    got my card today, WOOOOT!!

anyhow, got the volts to go up to 1.2V, but as I'm stuck with a Powercolor HD5850, my maximum clocks are 775/1225 as of now. I'm loving this card though, I can max Crysis out at 1280x1024 (that's the max res my CRT can handle anyway) with 4xAA and it's smooth

Damnit, I'm trying to get to 900 core, but I can't even get above 775 before it starts to flicker and generally freak out.
Did I just get a bad card or what's going on? Could it have anything to do with drivers?

Changed drivers and reformatted (haven't done that since I went from nVidia > ATI, so I figured why not), but I still can't get above 800 core and 1100 memory, running that stable with 1.16 volts at the moment. At 900/1200 1.2V I get ****loads of flickering, ending up in just vertical stripes and I have to reboot. Even 830/1150 1.2V it still persists.

So, you think I just got a bad card, or what's the problem? Doesn't get too hot, just about 79C/80C.

it's most likely that the card you got just can't handle anything higher atm

Cause of drivers, or what? I could've just got a bad card I suppose.

Anyone else have some weird stuttering? FPS is fine but sometimes when I scroll the map in Empire, or just drive around in Red Faction Guerrila, it's like it stops for a microsecond to load. Tried with and without overclocking, same problem. Hoping it's just drivers, using the official AMD ones, not the latest beta (since I thought they were hindering my OC).

Also, how do I set vsync for a specific game? Can't seem to find it in CCC, haven't had a ATI card since x800 so I'm pretty lost.

just a regular, stupid question....would i gain anything by going to a 5850 over my current 4870 (512)other than dx11? has anyone found a bottleneck with a "slower" q6xxx processor?

just wondering since i havent had time to read the whole thread...

    xp32 now, W7 soon...

FO3, STALKER (any) CoD W@W, L4D and a few others...

probably a useless upgrade at my resolution.

@ the ones overclocking. Have you tried OC the core itself only? It should work fine! Also, high temperatures may diminish OC capacity.

That seems to have done it for me. 800/1100 @ 1.12V now, running good. Think it was the heat.

But I still have that weird ass stuttering. The fact that I got several hard lockups that ended up in massive green vertical stripes when I ran memory @ 1200 1.2V is worrying. Is there any way I can check if I pretty much ****ed up my VRAM? Don't remember if this issue was present before I clocked, I think it was, not 100%.

edit: Tried Crysis Warhead, excellent performance and the clock is stable. Only stuttered 1, maybe 2 times, and that's when I headed into a massive vista where the scenery changed alot. Sooo I guess it's a driver issue then. If I'd broken something there would be more issues, don't you agree? Oh and temp is nice, max 70C in Warhead.

edit numero 2: Are there any coolers out yet that do what they're supposed to on a 5850? I know stuff like Accelero S1 REV2 fits the card, but does it cool everything that needs to be cooled? Anyone tried?

Ertard, I dont think that heat is a problem at 80C. I think you flashed your bios right? maybe your card does not like the bios you used, maybe you should try another one.

I dont think its possible that a card is not working stable at 800/1100 unless there is something wrong...

Yeah, think I'm gonna flash back to my Sapphire and just go with that. Thing is, I couldn't back it up when I had it for some reason. Found a Sapphire BIOS on a forum, but I don't really feel like flashing it you know, don't know what might be in it.

So if anyone got a Sapphire BIOS, and could find a way to dump it, I would appreciate it.

Flashed original BIOS, and now running 9.10. Bit smoother performance, Empire doesn't stutter. Just Red Faction, but that seems to be ****ed up on most hardware anyway.

Higher clocks as well with 9.10, 820/1120 now, stock voltage.

Anyone that bought an aftermarket cooler and could provide some experience? Seen some people on other forums with the Accelero Twin Turbo and such, but they say you gotta get seperate VRAM heatsinks, so I'm not too sure if it's worth the risk, even if the stock fan sounds like a jet at anything over 30%.

Snagged one out of a small batch at Newegg. HIS 5850. Im upgrading from a 512mb 4870 so Im pretty excited. Should be a decent jump from everything Ive read, and should place me well for my future i7 rig. Ill be doing a fresh new install of win7 that Ive got waiting. Damn I love new gear and the feeling of a fresh updated computer!

This sucks... I have to put up with the bloody noise and high temperatures because with dual monitors the card doesn't underclock all the way and the memory remains at full speed, if I overclock the clocks go down to where they were supposed to be but then I get flickering on the secondary monitor!!

    Arrrgh
