I definitely do like 0x00000008 morewhen it is not in smoke and glass. Perhaps like Guruknight suggested, just add it to the OP as a choice? I could go looking for more AO profiles, but in general with these AOs, if they work poorly with smoke or transparency, they look great elsewhere... and if they work well with smoke or transparency, the looks only OK elsewhere. I'll go searching for others too. Perhaps I can find a stronger one which also works well with glass and smoke. Edit: just went through everyflag. These 2 present the basic situation. Weak with no artifacts, strong with smoke/transparency artifacts. I really wish NV gave us more control over the AO injection, we probably could create some nice stuff with more fine grain controls.
