I completely agree, HBAO+ can't really be recommended in either Dead Space 2 or Dead Space 3.
Simply too many problems with any AO flag :/

    0x00000008 glass
    0x0000001A glass
    none glass

    0x00000008 light on glass
    0x0000001A light on glass
    none light on glass

    0x00000008 corner
    0x0000001A corner
    none corner

the 0x0000001A is definitely waaaaaay more subtle (as the previoous screens have also shown). I definitely do like 0x00000008 morewhen it is not in smoke and glass.

Perhaps like Guruknight suggested, just add it to the OP as a choice? I could go looking for more AO profiles, but in general with these AOs, if they work poorly with smoke or transparency, they look great elsewhere... and if they work well with smoke or transparency, the looks only OK elsewhere.

I'll go searching for others too. Perhaps I can find a stronger one which also works well with glass and smoke.

Edit: just went through everyflag. These 2 present the basic situation. Weak with no artifacts, strong with smoke/transparency artifacts.

I really wish NV gave us more control over the AO injection, we probably could create some nice stuff with more fine grain controls.

have you tried "0C", "19" and "35"? those flags aren't listed in inspector, "19" will probably work with fear :book:

Tested this one yesterday and lots of flicker, not sure if related to my other settings + SweetFX but it was unplayable, using the Fifa14 setting works without flicker but not sure if it removes other aspects (not good at spotting such things!).

The FIFA 14 AO flag will have absolutely no effect on IQ in FIFA 15.
This is because this official AO flag is DX9 only, where as FIFA 15 is DX11 ;)

Turning off "Volumetric Lights" might also be worth a try in F.E.A.R. :)
This affects windows and reflections as well.

thanks for testing and for the feedback, after more testing i've captured the moment when ao flickered -> http://youtu.be/4rPRBQbG7vc, and it happened with all compatible flags, so hbao is impossible without flickering. MrBonk, could you remove my recommendation for fifa 15, or, move to the not recommended list?

Just tried out all the flags. 19 works, but manifests the same problems with smoke and glass.

Also tested turning off volumetric lighting. In fear the setting only affects the volumetric lighting (which is very sparsely used in the entire game). It does not affect the glass in any way that I can see. Hrmmm, looks like we are stuck with an odd case.

DOH! Of course, thanks for reminding me :)

Thanks for checking, shame as it did look so much better in your screenshots.

Notes: The only solution so far, since all the other compatible flags has issues like bleeding, flickering or performance related. Hood and Cockpit camera disables the effect, but it happens with all compatible flags. Effect is not applied to cutscenes which occurs with all working flags. (Working with 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions).

What other flags have been working for you? I'm asking because I've been just playing FEAR with 1A, and it's definitely has flickering problems.

I only played through 2 levels with it on and did not notice flickering, otherwise I beat the game without AO. Where did you notice it? If so, then this game may not just have a "perfect" AO profile.

There are other AO profiles, similar to 1A that give the GPU extra load wilst applying a very very subtle amount of Ao (mainly to wall corners), but I did not test them beyond less than 2 minutes each. Also, I tested them all on the same 2 levels really.

Note: AO is not applied to the cars, unfortunately none of the compatible flags applies it anyway. (Working with 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions). Shots was taken with 4xSGSSAA using "0x000010C1" flag and Texturing Lod Bias set to -1.5000. :infinity:

i'm curious, are there perhaps any game settings that affect how HBAO+ is inserted?

I wonder if the issue with Volumetric lights could be fixed with a custom flag?

I may install the game and try myself. (Since I have a DRM free version that I store on a backup hard drive)

I seem to recall there being another post about the issues with DS2.

Do you think it should be removed?

I thought it looked ok with the lighting tweak?

And I wonder if the effect may be resulting from you forcing 8xMSAA as well.

Perhaps if just using just 2x2 DSR with SMAA/FXAA with HBAO+ would help the issue?

Eh, are you sure that's HBAO+ flickering? Do you notice it during normal gameplay or normal replays without crazy panning like this?

This seems like an Edge case to me that can be overlooked.

Could be related to Resolution, resolution aspect ratio (even if slightly different like 1366x768).

Has happened in the past. Is a tricky thing to mess with.

I'm starting to think that pretty much EVERY AO flag at somepoint even if working 90% of the time in any given game will have some flicker or issue of some kind.

AO is a different beast than AA. I don't know if Nvidia really thought this through enough.
