Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't SuperPi still relying on the (long since deprecated) x87 FPU instruction set?

Not really the best way to show off any performance gains.

Then again few benchmarks are, aside from actual application benchmarks.

hm more execution branches, improved front end, better single threaded performance because of bigger registers and yet it fails behind? sound a bit fishy to me

edit: not to mention its a x87 code, I will wait for real applications and games that actually benefit from these improvements

and then make a decision :)

That's true. Also, I don't think it'd hurt if intel took a small break from trying to improve CPU performance and focused on everything else like power efficiency or gpu power.

Both Ivybridge and Sandybridge and now Haswell focused entirely on GPU and power efficiency.

If you take a look at Ivy Bridge and look past the Tri-gate transistor technology that they introduced with it, most of the improvements on it were done to the GPU and power.

that was an engineering sample right?
i will wait for the real benchmarks, with mature revisions

I look at the benchmark and i think that i will need to change my motherboard too and i feel like.......naah, i'll pass.

My i5 3570K is good enough for me.

See you in 2-3 years Intel......maybe.

Given that the new top of the range CPU has a TDP of 88W IIRC, 14% over the 77W of the 3770K, the performance-per-watt might go down the drain as well if these numbers are anything to go by. I know they've integrated the voltage reg on there as well, but surely that can't use an extra 11W of power.

I have a feeling that since Intel has been heavily focusing on the energy saving and IGP aspects of Haswell, they may have compromised a bit on IPC performance since that is not an area they are under any pressure to improve much upon, esp with weak competition. It will still be a good performing chip, more efficient at what it does, but more so on the multi-core front than IPC. So we may not see significant gains vs IB on that front, esp when it comes to gaming or single threaded apps, but for anything multi-threaded, it will still be a force to reckon with.

    A. I won't trust anything unless I see it here (from Hilbert).
    B. If it overclocks better, I'm in.

Hmm. Well makes the decision easy for me then, Just picked up a bulk item crosshair 4 extreme for 100 bucks. might as well through out the x6 and get a fx 8350 since its similar in performance to ivy i wont have to worry about haswell blowing its doors off.. Plus 5.5ghz sounds like fun to me..

Regardless of what the nay sayers are saying, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the new FX processors. Get it and have fun.

Im not a fanboy mind you, but all iv had since 2005 is amd's Every time i go to switch over to intel something happen whether they are over priced or pushed back afew months i always end up going with the latest and greatest amd lol.. well expt for the 1055t, I just wanted to say I had a 6 core and found out it can overclock VERY well..

Why is AMD getting dragged into this thread? Not relevant to the topic (or performance.)

    Point A is sensible.

Point B depends on your existing rig. I'm fine for at least another generation I think.
