Yeah thats what I thought mate, cheers.

I never recorded anywhere what my temps were when I got the card but i'm sure they were mid 60's max.

Certainly never saw it hitting 79/80'c and then start to down clock a notch like it did last night.

Hmmmm, i'll try a reseat and put some MX-4 on when I get home tomorrow.

    check afterburner /precision readings regularly.
if you need to make a custom fan then make one.

    OK,

    Gigabyte G1:
Minimum fan speed is locked to 34%(~1565rpm).
At idle, the fan definitely the loudest noise in my system by far.
I may have to do something about that.

    Idles at 26C(ambient 19C)
Fan rpm essentially remains at the same rpm from 34% to 50%.
Then is seems to increase linearly, i.e. at 65C the fan was 65%(2041 rpm)

Heaven benchmark, default settings @1440p, default fan profile:
    Max Temp 65C
    Max fan 65%(2041 rpm).

The load fan noise is very acceptable with music, etc, no complaints there.
It is just the idle noise that is a problem for me.

    Coil whine:
None during Heaven where max fps hit ~120fps.
But definite whine at the Heaven ending splash screen where the fps was over 3200fps.

That's all I've done so far.

This G1 is freaking awesome! I got these 1562 core and 7970 Memory OC! My firestrike went from 10075 to 10757! Played a quick round OF BF3, metro map and its amazing! The smoke with my 7870 was just like a big cloud. Now it comes from the vents and looks so freaking real. I now know why I was getting shot so much in BF3? I didn't have the visual range like the others. Thanks Scooby Doo for the advise of getting this awesome gigabyte G1!

Yes I def hear you on the idle fan speed.. it annoys me too. I can very easily accept when the cards start to work that the fan gets going, but at idle for the fans to be at 1600RPM is stupid.

In my case having that x2 is definitely annoying at times, and so as mentioned repeatedly in this thread, I am eager to mod the bios.

Wow, even better than I expected! Great OC on that guy!!

Glad that you're happy with it, and may it serve you well :D

I wonder if they have screwed up the firmware. It is pretty ridiculous that they have set the minimum speed at ~1600 RPM and nothing happens between 34-50%.

Maybe we should start bombing their support email about their "flawed" bios?

Risk is that you get a "new" BIOS which turns out to be exactly the same as you had already installed :) Happened to me while talking to MSI support, flashed my cards with exactly the same stuff which was there already.

I emailed them already last night asking if there were plans to unlock it.
    We'll see if I get a response.

    Sorted it :)

Took off cooler, cleaned Tim, reapplied MX-4 and now back to 63'c max temps.

As i suspected when i had my card out of my case a few days ago it must have had loose screws or i somehow unseated the cooler so contact wasn't good.

    Phew....

    Okay, got mine installed.

    - No annoying coil noises so far.
    - Fan speed curve is stupid, but it's a bit quieter than what I feared.
    - Luckily mine doesn't have any annoying side noises from the fans.
    - Power limit wise this kicks MSI's butt.
    - Cooler seems to do nice job under load.
    - ASIC score was 73.1%
    - Boosts to ~1400 MHz by default, about 115 MHz higher than the MSI I had.

I'll do the same once they respond to you. Psychological warfare.

All in all, this is basically free from the flaws that my GTX 780 GHz Edition had. (Horrid coil whine, fan issues.)

Welcome to the club, bro. Don't forget to annoy Gigabyte's technical support. ;)

Well my fan issues have disappeared. Just a caveat re Overclockers...seems their policy has changed and they can deduct 25% of price if the card has been used..

I replied well if it's faulty it's faulty no..so cant see this 25% being fair or how actually it will be applied. Guy wasnt 2 talkative so didnt really get a straight answer. Plus didnt seem to grasp my problem was intermittent...which perhaps is understandable as generally tech is faulty or no..

In my case it seems to have solved itself..which is slightly odd.

I mean surely you return a card for a fault and that's that..anyways I did an rma in case problem returns.

HOLY FREAKING CRAP that card is massive, it's longer than I expected it to be. I personally am happy that I decided to go for two asus strix gtx 970's instead of these gigabyte 970's that are incredibly and quite unusually too long. The graphic cards are due to arrive on 16th of october, I can't wait...I'll post some pics as soon as I will gently slide them gently into the pcie slots :D

Not that long for anyone with a full tower case

Well yeah, obviously, but for us with mid-tower pc cases, you have to either out the hdd tray to fit the card and the card often has contact with the sata connectors and cables on the backside, or you if you're lucky, the card is fitting like a glove but you have zero to none space left between your hdd tray and the long end of the card...

I don't think that it's any longer than their previous cards.

I had two gtx 670's before with these 3xwindforce coolers and that card was almost 4 centimeters shorter and in width it was also smaller by a few milimeters compared to this 970 with the similar cooler.

Some overclocking results. I'm not 100% sure if stable (EDIT: Not quite, need to lower the core little bit. EDIT2: Would be stable if power saving would mess things up.).

18K GPU score is so close...
