After reading Hilbert's review of the i7's, it only makes sense to go multi-GPU if I want to take advantage of the Nehalem's power. I'll buy whatever is fastest, be it ATI or Nvidia. I guess we'll see Unc. If that's the case, I'll put it on eBay or craigslist and buy something else.
I've been waiting almost 3 years to totally revamp my rig. Would you wait any longer? Especially when the wife has given the go-ahead to spend a lot of money?
Yea my plan is to hopefully move up to the 55nm 290 or gx2 version of it and wait till I can move up to i7. When that happens I will and another gpu because i7 is for multi GPU and single gpu won't give you worth while gains at least from my current rig.
i say no need to upgrade from a 8800gtx unless ur gettin lag @ like 1920x1200 which is unlikely unless u need AA and AF turned up which at that high resolution is not really needed, but if ur pockets are deep.. get another 8800gtx or just wait for the next gen of cards and im not talkin gtx 290 either, maybe something after that. im completely satisfied with my 8800gtx i run everything smooth as a baby's bottom :infinity:
Can I get some links for info on the new mobo/chipset, CPU and GPU that yall are raving about? I've just been sitting on my current rig and upgrading the graphics cards (6800nu, 7900GT, 8800GT, 8800 GTS) and this has been a great rig. However I think the time has come to start to piece together my new rig. What is all this i7 buzz? How expensive will it be to build a rig around it? Sounds pricey if you must have two GPUs to get the full benefit of the hardware.
Yes, lets see your 8800GTX run Warhead @ 1920x1200 with full AA and AF and try to stay above a snails pace. Get real, the 8800GTX is doing good for a 2 year old card, but it is still showing it's age in modern games. The GTX280 completely eats the card alive and the new 55nm GT206-302 will widen the gap even further. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=1 I would say the G200 series is just as much of a success as the 8800GTX and Ultra. Especially when we see this new 55nm refresh hit. If one generation can ~double the performance of the old (G80 vs GT200), then I think they have done well. 8800GTX is no more than a $100 mid-range card now (it's on par with the 8800GT), unless you live in some country where prices are ridiculous for all hardware.
Just check out the multiple articles that Guru of 3D has done so far. From what I have gathered the i7 cores are all quads and come in three flavors the 920 which runs at 2.66ghz, the 940 at 2.9ghz, and the 960 at 3.2ghz. The price at $280, $550, and $999. Also it is said that 1.6v DDR3 is better recommend it for the boards and the Asus ROG mobo is coming in at about $400+. I think the best move for myself it to get a really fast card and then plot my new platform upgrade of the next year and a half. I want to give DDR3 the chance to drop some more and wait for the 6 or 8 core procs!
Dude I really wish Crysis would get removed from peoples benchmarking. That game is a POS and people need to face it. The game runs like pure dog sh!t and no new or future GPU will be able to get it going like it should. Also The Witcher doesn't run well either but I won't harp on that one but why post benchmarks from 2560 x 1600? Who really games at that res, other than people trying really hard to flex their e-pen? The 8800gtx is a mythical card that is starting to show its age but the simple fact is if you have an 8800gtx sli system today from launch you still have a great rig that can give you almost all the eye candy if not all at high fps.
Far Cry 2 @ 1920x1200 4xAA Seems good enough to me. And for the record, the GTX280 is not bring the giant leap in performance the 8800GTX/Ultra did. Two 8800GTX/Ultras in SLi outperform a GTX280. Two 7900GTXs in SLi were slower than one 8800GTX/Ultra.
1 Step for GTX280, 1 Giant leap for geek kind..ha Hi "And for the record, the GTX280 is not bring the giant leap in performance the 8800GTX/Ultra did." What a load of crap !!! The GTX 200 series is a leap in performance due to the simple fact that they are a leap in technology. Can you even comprehend how small the chip is now. Just 1 chip with a **** load of transistors ! Anyways all you GTX 280 supporters, annoyed with the sound db of the fan on the card? I just finished a watercooling build with a BFG GTX 280 H20 and the results are WOW. Plays Far Cry 2 fully maxed out settings at 1920x1200 whilst running at 36 degrees (load) without a sound. Was a big build, hopefully I will be on Rig of the month as the modding was crazy
Scientifically the 280 is 80% faster than the 8800GTX. I'm talking about when you stack the rops/shaders/mem/etc. against each other. Sub system can get in the way of benchmarks though and make it look like less ie. CPU limitation/driver.
I dont think we will have another card like GTX/Ultra that stays at the top for 2 years, for a long time. This was realy a mistake on NVs part that they are paying for now.
The GTX 200 series is based on the G80 chip. Just more beefed up and huge. It's not really new technology
