I'm just writing this to tell my 3dMark06 score for comparing as I have a similar system but with a faster version of the CPU (also my graphics card is factory OC'd which makes it slightly faster). Since the OP asked that if he had a 6000+ CPU he would get scored of 11k+ I can just agree to some other posters in the thread that he will not.

Last evening I overclocked my CPU some (the 5600+ isn't that overclock friendly sadly so I only raised the frequenzy with just over 100 MHz) and got a score of 8714. Before the OC it was just above 8500.

Since it seems that it is quite safe to overclock even the graphics card some I'll do that tonight. People seems to have them at 600 / 1800 with load temperatures at around 80C with base fan which is far from too hot. Anyway, with the gfx card overclocked I probably see scores of 9000+ but that's it.

So to the OP, the only way for you to see far higher 3dMark06 scores would be by upgrading to a Core 2 Duo and then overclock that one. At least without also upgrading the gfx card to a GTX.

i was running my gts 320mb on a amd64 3200+ and it was holding my video card back big time i upgrade to amdx2 4200 and overcloked it to 2.7ghz and perfomance is alot better now .

Hmm i will have to reinstall 3dmark06 just for the sake of it and see how my system rates against these 8800's. lol.

check to see if your system is cpu bound when oblivion is running. leave task manager running whilst your playing and have a look at the cpu graphs when you exit. if one of your cores is pegged at 100% cpu then a faster cpu will certainly help.

note, this test isn't necessarily valid with every game because some may still spin on cpu whilst idle (aka busy waiting) which pegs your cpu at 100% irrespective of your processor performance capability. many games did this over 5 years or so ago but it's thankfully much less common now. I know this behaviour is not exhibited by oblivion.

    Hi,

I get a 3dmark06 cpu component score of around 2150 with an athlon x2 5600+ clocked at just under 3.0GHz (and of course the x2 6000+ is clocked @ 3GHz). so for a rough approximation of what a cpu upgrade would do to your score, take my cpu score and your sm2.0 and sm3.0 scores and plumb them into 3dmark06 formula:

What do you guys think about this CPU???

    AMD Opteron 185 Denmark 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
I guess is the top of the line for socket 939 at around $240... How does this processor compare to a higher end AM2 CPU like for instance an x2 5600? I was thinking that I could purchase this CPU and give some extra life to my MOBO... I have tried to get some reviews for this CPU but could not find anything...

Would it really help to upgrade my ram to 2 x 1gb? what ram do you guys recommend?

I've done a search through the 3dmark06 cpu results on futuremark.com for you and the dual core amd opteron processors clocked @2.6GHz come out at around 2000-2050 for the cpu benchmark. so about the same as the x2 series at similar clock speeds (with 3dmark06).

ram will effects 3dmarks but that is it , at that resolution you play at it will have little or no effect on games

Opterons are the same as X2's just biult to run in a server enviroment and so usaually overclock better

My CPU score on 3dmark06 is ~1,500... leaving benchmarking for a second... will the difference be noticeable if I invest on this CPU... what about overclocking my existing CPU to about 2,500mhz? I heard that it is fairly easy to achieve but haven't tried yet...

Hi - i got around an extra 400 3d marks when I overclocked my 3800 x2 to 2.5ghz (which most 3800 x2's will do without an issue) - not a huge increase you may think but remember that this extra performance is for free..

How do you overclock your CPU? I see that I could easily do it using my MOBO bios up to 10% increase (to 2.2mhz)... any help you be appreciated....

go to the overclocking section and read the overclockers guide
