Had my first grey screen in 2 days after closing down youtube in Google Chrome. I'm starting to believe that it's a hardware fault also as no change in drivers rectifies the problem.
I haven't experienced the above mentioned problems with my HD5870 (Knock on wood) but appears as if the issue will be shortly addressed:
I originally had a 5850 that was giving me the gray screen crashes that I had to RMA. I switched to a 5870 without changing a SINGLE thing software wise and it's running flawlessly, I'd have to agree with you. Signs definitely point to hardware issues. I'd say it's bad QC trying to push these cards out the door to get the Christmas sales in/get as many sales in before Nvidia releases their fermi series.
I'm having this blue strips too. I notice that before the lock up my PC was very slow and the clocks of the GPU were high even when i was using nothing. This happens after i use my pc after long hours of idle. The sound was cracking too.
After using all means trying to settle the problem, I give up. Tomorrow I will swap the card to an Nvidia 260+. Ati 5xxx series really have a lot of problem...
the Ati cards have problems! http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1466677 http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=241042 http://forums.amd.com/game/messagev...=122932&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear
For me the crashes were powerplay related, create a profile in CCC to run full speed when idle. Problem gone.
Yeah ati idle uses little power so could be the issue... I only have the issue when idleing and most people do aswell. Its strange if it happens in game. Hotfix has not solved the problem for me.
i was having that problems only when gamming and allways in dx11 and rarelly in dx9 games. i´ve sent mine to RMA, let´s hope it was hardware or else i will not stay with the 5000 series.
For me the problem only appears when sitting idle/browsing internet. When gaming the card performes perfectly. Doesn't seem very hardware related to me, more like messed up driver settings, as AbjectBlitz mentioned. The giant mouse pointer issue was resolved with the hotfix.
It's a windows 7 problem, it's gotta be. I'm running windows 7 32bit/Xp dual boot and have NEVER had the Grey/Stripe crash in XP.
the things is there are some users wiyh 5870 cards and witn windows7 x64 that never had any issue. ati is failling big time on this one.
I have same problem (grey screen crash in XP 32bit, Vista 32bit and Win7 32bit)(I have been using 9.12 hotfix + SDK). all my ways have done, but fail to. what is hardware the wrongness or software the wrongness. are there best solution.....? please help me and all in forum GURU3D.
It came back today, was working fine last night. Started the PC up today and crash after god damn crash. Safe mode wiped the drivers, reinstalled applied same settings and fine agian. SIGH, get on it ATI drivers are a bag of ****e. Getting fed up of reinstalling drivers every few days.
I say to stop waiting for drivers to fix it. RMA the card while you still can. A lot of people who were having problems and ended up RMAing their first cards got ones that worked flawlessly. I really think there was just a bad batch or two that got through QC.
