I finally got my new PC working last night and have been playing Far Cry 2 on it.

Just today however, my game starts having horrible graphical glitches after perhaps 15~40 minutes of gameplay.

The glitches include scanlines (light and darker bands), model distortion among others. I will take a screenshot when I can.

It first started after I moved up from my 4870X2's factory-OC of 780/900, to 790/990 (Auto-tuned). I tried downclocking back to 782/900 (slider won't get back on 780...) and even going down further to 782 core, and forcing fan speed at 80%.

Is there a problem with the card, requiring a RMA? I don't think its overheating, seems to remain around 78 degrees Celsius which I'm sure is decently good for this card.

    Specifications:
Phenom II X4 940BE, stock configuration, CoolerMaster V8/AC-MX2
    MSI DKA790GX PLATINUM
    Kingston HyperX DDR2-800MHz 6GB (3x2GB), 4-4-4-18
    MSI R4870X2-OC
    Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
    ASUS Xonar DX
    CoolerMaster Storm Sniper Dragon Edition
    Corsair HX1000
    Windows Vista x64 Ultimate

What drivers are you using ??
I have never had something similar , and did the game all the way ...
Ati Catalyst 8.12 HotFix are the best kown for this game.
Also, ATI (prior to 8.12 hf) specifically released a driver / hotfix fot THIS game.

Get Riva Tuner, configure automatic fan control, and you will stay under 60c with 70% fan. Nothing to do, but its better lo keep that card cooler. The factory settings for the fan are just a joke.

It hangs around 65C at 75%+ fan speed.

    I'm on 8.12, non-hotfix.

I encountered a similar problem in Red Alert 3 (albeit after a longer time). I notice that downclocking my card to around 700/900 with full fan speed kept the problem at bay, at least in Red Alert 3, anyway.

Right now I'm forcing it at 100% fan speed for my Catalyst Gaming profile, I'm about to try 777/900 (closer to my factory overclock).
I'll get back if it glitches again.

Your clocks should not be a problem
I play lots of diff games, qith high OC profiles.
I would install CCC 8.12 Hot Fix, since it provides better performance for multi core CPUS and fixes some things.
Also, 9.2 are ok for gaming.
I find hard to beleive that its a problem with your clocks.
Try this drivers if not luck, RMA it QUICK.

I used to get the strangest artifacts in FC2; anything from trippy colors on textures in the distance (mountains/trees/grass) to 1/4 of the screen taken up by a black box artifact that only shows up when looking in a certain direction.

All of this came from running a certain driver vs another and also FC2 has notorious bugs/errors mainly stemming from a serious VRAM leak that causes many users to crash at 30 minutes to 1 hour of play.

Also, with FC2 and 8.12 DISABLE AA IN CCC CONTROL PANEL AND ENABLE IT ONLY BY FC2 SETTINGS .

If you have AA enabled in CCC, and in game, you will have problems.

Also, make sure you have FC2 patched, so you have the "widescreen" option on your settings.

All my CCC control settings for 3D are currently Application Defined.

Far Cry 2 is already patched. I play at 1920x1080, 4xAA, Ultra High preset.

Question about the hotfix; it just installs over the existing driver?

    Yes, you can install over.
My advice is to go to control panel, ati sfotware, uninstall from it
choose uninstall all ati software. This will uninstall everything but your profiles, etc
    reboot
    install 8.12 hto fix release
    reboot.

google for the 8.12 hot fix it since it is not listed on amd directly any more (or I could not find it)
however, the link its from amd.

Even its named hot fix its a complete set of drivers / software.

If you are lucky and get problems solved, with this one or 9.2 , forget about CCC and get rivatuner ot OC, etc.

If you have no luck, consider that most probably your X2 memory is not good, thus, high mem clock speeds, makes it fail (there you go with the glitches). If so, RMA it.

There are 4870 cards, that come OCed from factory, that are known to have problems with the memory so you have to down clock them to work properly.

this is just bullSh****, RMA and get a std 4870X2 from a good brand, since you can OC it anyway, to like 840/1000 (for example )no prob.

Also check that you have adaptative aa stuff to optimal and ATI A.I ENABLED.
adaptative AA to quality can cause probs, plus its no profit with games like FC2

Right now I ran at 777/900 with 100% fan in RA-3, no glitches.

I haven't tried the Hotfix but anyhow, I've got Adaptive AA on optimal and Catalyst A.I. on Advanced. I will get back if I see further glitching, or if my problems are solved.

You need to move on to 8.12 hf at least. Take my word

    100% fan makes no sense

750/900 is stock for that card

It's in Crysis too... So far only Red Alert 3 is the one that managed to get around the problem, and even then my performance seems to be below normal.

Do like i told you :)

    Let me know

Pd: crysis is not good to measure perf is a pos that will eat any rig

Glitching still occuring. Takes longer to occur with lower core clocks...

did you try new drivers ??

is it (still) ocurring with different games as well??

I would not loose much time.

Yes, still occuring with all three games. I'm using hotfix.

Well try 9.2 but i think is not going to help

I am assuming gpu is in the correct pci slot
If your mobo is crossfire ready try the other slot
Also check your psu cables connection etc
    The psu is 1000w new?
Could be faulty psu as well or cables so you gpu is not getting enough volts
    Try to discard this

do you have removed the default onboard video driver?

graphical distortions most likely caused by high temperature. did CC ever warn you about VPU recover b4?

oh, and try to re-seat the card and clear the pci-e slot from dust. sometimes it disrupts the communications between the MB and the card.. happens to me once.. my card only runs on x1 and performance are slightly lower than usual.. re-setting the card solves that. thanks to Guru's :):)

It's very new, I'm sure there was no dust.

The driver did crash a couple of times.
