Grand Theft Auto V Graphics Performance Review

If anyone has a setup similar to a 8350/290 I did some testing and found a good combo of settings to maintain a solid 60fps. all high settings across the board, 1080p, fxaa, no msaa, no advanced features except extended draw distance can be adjusted to about 40%-60%. basically so you dont get popin. the actual distance you are able to see in the world itself is far higher than the next gen consoles. and high detail streaming when flying is possible too. Online seems to be cut down in a few ways and with these settings i never dipped below 50fps.

Looks like ill jump up to very high/ultra when i get a 390x! should be pretty sweet. I also expect driver improvements and patches to improve performance more as well even though the game runs pretty great now it can only get better.

 

many YouTube video have 750ti at 1080p with a combination of high and very high with fxaa used. density slider pretty high also BTW 55-75 fps which is great I believe.

Now some good news to Guru's with not that strong gaming rigs
Didn't have enough time (work, work...) to download and fire up GTA V on any of my or kids gaming rigs so I've used one older gaming PC now mainly used as HTPC to download game via Steam (more than 1.5 days of download non-stop, Jesus!) and see how it performs on outdated hardware:

AMD Athlon II X4 640, 4x 3GHz
4GB DDR3/1333
MSI GTX 560Ti HAWK 1GB GDDR5 (GPU/mem=950/4200)
Win7 Ultimate SP1 x64

With some old 33x.xx drivers game didn't run well, it was very choppy while driving so... DDU, latest 350.12 WHQL and it was completely different story

In 1600x900 with graphic details between Low to High game is running realy nice, average fps is between 45 and 50, and it consumes just a bit below 800MB of VRAM measured in MSI AB 4.1.0 (in settings menu game reports it will use 1022MB ov VRAM, but obviously game is wrong). And wit that Low/High detail level game still looks very decent

My bigest surprise is RAM consuming, watch this: game never goes above 4GB! Measured in MSI AB 4.1.0 game never uses more than 3980MB! That is some awesome work from Rockstar, thumbs up guys!

Now just to hide from my kids till this weekend a fact game is installed on that HTPC and still not yet on their Steam game list

Just a little update about other hardware on that old gaming rig I've tested GTA V, maybe it'll be interesting to those wondering how game performs running from good old (SATA2) HDD:
mobo: MSI 770-C43, AMD770/SB710 chipset/SB
HDD (GTA V is installed on that drive): Hitach 500GB, model: HDS721050CLA362, 16MB cache, 7200rpm, SATA2
RAM: 2x 2GB Kingston ValueRAM DDR 1333, CL 9-9-9-24, 1.5V

Never did that before but I've heard that you can transfer (in my case via home LAN) all Steam game files from one PC to another. Both PC's are using running same Steam account, my own. It'll be much faster for me than downloading same Steam game files all over again via Steam, they are already downloaded on that HTPC. Thanks in advance!

Well, we will need more review, but thoses russian and polish obscure sites are allways a bit strange in their results..

Let say, at this point the russian one give a 130-140% advantage on the 980 vs 290x, when on guru review they are on paar... I dont know who is wrong or who is right, but that seems like a big difference between 2 reviews no ?

After read the guru review, i have search other review, and like allways fall on thoses 2 sites ...

 

for starters, the settings are not quite the same.
secondly there's a difference in benchmark methods.
also, guru notes possible variations due to random spawn positions / weather in online map.

all results could be right as far as I'm concerned.

I never play heavy duty games. Should I upgrade to a 960 or 970 for this, or do I wait for the new AMD cards?

GTX 780 Ti is faster than R9 290X - it's wrong because very likely this review from Guru3D.com by admin is mistaked.

p.s coming from ppl form steam forums and around the web, these results are crap and false.. even on nvidia cards it is false

Results vary from testbench to testbench. Not all machines have the same specs. I suggest running the in-game benchmark and compare to others if you want to happy with what you have.

Or if your like me and the game runs smooth on high-ultra settings just be happy and ignore the people who try and fight over the charts like their opinion will change it.

 

Well said, we should be happy it works smooth on both AMD and nVidia not who comes on top.

 

I see there's like 9 reviews linked here (including guru3d).
haven't gone through all of them but results don't seem to be very consistent and generally its bad practice to "choose" one over the other.

That was always been the case between nVidia and AMD, what nVidia team do with drivers, AMD do with raw compute performance, so, when GPU becomes old, it always end up with AMD being stronger (tho, years might pass).

 

@HH: Can you do same vram utilization measurement for Titan X as you did w/ r9-290x?

 

I'm impressed with the GTX 970 results at 1920X1080, between 70-95 fps.

Looks like my next card will be a 970.

 

Thanks Hillbert! As always this is a new game. It will need plenty of debugging, and at least 2 driver releases, for things to get worked out. I will say this: "Rockstar took a lot of time and care, for this release for the PC crowd. It was completely redone from the ground up visually. It is nice to see that they did not just rush out a smattering of dogs4!t. Unlike the first release of GTA 4, for PC." Pc "was" there roots, GTA San Andreas almost killed them with that coffee shop debacle. Will give them props, for taking time to make a full "PC" release. We will have to wait and see on the future improvements. Am just digging in now, so off i go! Look forwards to updates here!
