    Hi all!

To cut to the chase, my father's GPU (a GIGABYTE GTX 970 G1) seems on its way out. After almost 8 years of good service, it started crashing hic PC everytime he loaded up any game. I took the card to my own PC over the weekend, and I have replicated all his issues.

Whenever any game is booted up, the card crashes the PC after a few seconds, if not immediately. It did this with Kingdom Come, Cities Skylines, Grim Dawn, Spellforce 3, and when trying Fur Mark (not the burn-in test) without fail. My setup is completely different than his (including the PSU), so other components shouldn't be to blame. When I returned my GTX 1080, the problems went away. The 970's been cleaned, the fans spin, and the temperature in Fur Marks (before starting the test) is normal, so overheating shouldn't be a problem.

Any ideas? The GPU is old, so I wouldn't be that surprised if it was just the age showing. With that, I have another question - what to replace it with. Today's prices are ridiculous. I did manage to find a fresh GIGABYTE 2060 D6 6G for roughly 660$ (still too much for an previous gen card, but we all now the prices of current gen stuff from both AMD and NVIDIA), which would still be an upgrade for him...

I would welcome any help and suggestions. Thank you all in advance.

Second hand rx570 4gb (220$) would be even an upgrade for him. It should be faster than 970 and wont break a bank. Getting a 2060 for 660$ is a madness.

Yeah, second hand would be probably the best course price-wise. It's just the trust that's a problem.

Most of them are probably mining so yeah...

In a perfect world you could give him your 1080 and get a 30 series card for yourself. :)

if you want new then get a 3050 or 3060ti

    exactly.
1080->3060ti is a nice upgrade,60%,and 3060ti lhr can be found at somewhat reasonable prices

Oh don't get me wrong, undr normal prices that would be the case!;) But a GTX 3070 costs 1500$ here! If it at least had more than 8GB VRAM...

Isnt the 3050 close to 1080?Well more like 1070 but with dlss it can be so think about it keeping it.

From Hillbert's reviews it would seem that the 3050 has roughly 87% power of a 1080, so it's indeed closer to a 1070. It would be worth checking out, but only if the current listed price holds. That would be the first sane price fo a 30xx here...

3050 at 400eur is better on terms of frames per euro, dlss is a huge advantage for this card it should run 1440p dlssq at +60fps
Its in almost every new game, even mfs2020 is gonna get it some time in 2022

I dont think it would run 1440p dlss or not. Even 3060 cant hadle it properly. Thats the job for 3060ti/3070.

You can get a rx6600 non xt for 580eur. The 3050 needs to dlss just to catch on with it and its still slower overall.

    Replace the GPU paste.
Where paste (fitted by mfr) gets hot its sure to dry out eventually and become an insulator.
This is high on the list of possible reasons for failure, worth trying.
