You're not getting anything better from AMD than your current build. Anything AMD would be just a sidegrade from Phenom II X4 in terms of gaming. If you want more performance, you're gonna have to go with Intel.

What's you budget? Are you going to do heavy OC? Or light (4GHz) is enough? Planning to SLI/CF?

    So what's the budget?

Sweetspot for gaming at this moment would be i5 3470 + GTX 660 Ti. i5 3470 can be overclocked to 4GHz using ASRock Z77 motheboards. i5 3570K is for heavy OC. GTX 660 Ti is very good price/performance card. GTX 670 is about 15% faster @ 1920x resolutions, but costs 100$ more.

Everything else is simple. 2x4GB DDR3 1333/1600MHz 1.5V RAM, any current gen 7200RPM HDD, 128GB SSD for OS and games, quality 650W PSU for GTX 660 Ti SLI. Any case you want.

If you want to stick with AMD, my recommendation would be to upgrade your graphics card to a GTX660Ti and overclock your processor. For gaming, you already have one of AMD's best chips.

Are the i3 chips any good for gaming
ntel® Core i3 2100 Processor - 3.10GHz 3M Smart and the core to quads arnt priced far apart.I don't know the intel products to well.

Is the ASUS HD 6770, GDDR5 1GB, 128 bit, 850 MHz/4800 MHz any good or the VTX3D Radeon HD6850 1GB DDR5 depending on the wifes mood on the day of purchase

i3 isn't necessarily bad for gaming....but you would be better off with an i5 such as the 3550 Tj linked

the lower the resolution, the more the cpu comes into play

1680x1050 is still a "gpu bound" resolution....and not everyone wants or needs AA to enjoy their gaming experience.

gpu bound or not, an online shooter with 64 players or a mmo raid will run a lot better on a quad core cpu.

Ok, let me rephrase... i would definitely go with a quad for current games. if the op likes shooters, he'll probably get bf3. online games love fast cores. the more the better of course.
