Right I'm kinda stumped not sure whats causing this noticed my video card was running at x8 I know it has run at x16 before. I have pulled out all my hardware tried in different slots no change even with the sound card and the M.2 drive taken out any ideas?

Try clearing the CMOS and pull the battery for a few minutes, leave the M2 drive and sound card out, the MoBo probably enumerated the M2 drive and sound card, which both take up PCI-E lanes.

Still at x8 it should run just as well.

Well gave it a try and no joy, bit unsure what to do as I think ive tried almost anything possible. When I put it in the lower port I get it running at 1.1

How are you getting your reading? Are you using a stress test to check if the bus is switching to X16 mode? I know I've seen the PCIe drop to 1.1 and then jump back to 2.0 once stressed, not sure if bus speed does the same or not but worth checking.

might by tricky sometimes but I saw that problem with a friends pc and reseating the card like 10 times fixed it, but with your config I don't think it will matter anyway

Well the readings I'm getting is from my bios also from GPUz, to stress the GPU ive used the test in GPUz and even run games. In the top port it sits at x8 3.0.

You may have something on a third party sata port that is stealing bandwidth, is everything on intel ports? happed to me when I built this system. My ssd was in a crap shared port and my cards were running 4x 4x. Switched to intel and 8x 8x.

z170 chipset supports 20 pci-e lanes with skylake chips. your gpu will use 16 of those....4 lanes left over for nvme. shouldnt have any negative impact or take lanes away from gpu. As for the x8 issue, check your bios and see if you can force x16.

I got a feeling this is caused by a bad bios update but rolling back had no change, shame there is no option to force the card to x16.

Yeap running 1302 gonna try disabling SATA ports 1&2 as apparently they are supposed to get disabled if I'm using a M.2 drive.
