Hi, i wanna buy for my second System a PCIExpress Card. Now i dont know if i should buy a: - GF7900 GT 256 MB (XFX,EVGA -OC) or - ATi X1800 XT 512 MB (Sapphire) The Price is the same, please help me to buy the better Card!
Go for the X1800XT 512, it's faster than the 7900GT by almost 1000points in 3d05 at stock clocks. And in all the "shader intensive" games that are out (Oblivion) or coming out, ATI's design is far superior. Hell, in Oblivion the X1800XT is even beating the 7900GTX when you turn on the eyecandy.......
The X1800XT 512 will always outperform a 7900GT if you overclock both by the same amount (percentage wise). For some reason, everyone always talks about oc'ing the 7900GT, well guess what, you can OC the X1800XT too, and believe me, people have great success with it. Get the X1800XT 512, it is far superior in performance to the 7900GT, and you have that extra v-ram which should help with texture loading and high-res high-aa games.
is the x1800xt that far ahead of the 7900gt with the newer drivers netnexus? i was under the impression that they were on par with each other.
i dont know... the Benchmark of Guru 3 D, this Forum, Anandtech.com, Tomshardware and Hardocp.com says differrent results. Some says tha the X1800 XT-512MB is not good like GF7800GTX512 an other says that the GF7900Gt is better than GF7800GTX512 - i dont know what to believe...
I would go for the x1800xt itis much faster than the 7900gt at least by 10%. If they are the same price you are mad not to go for the x1800xt especially with the 512mb of vram you are more future proof
I didn't mean to imply it was particularly far ahead performance wise, but it does perform better. As I recall, however, the X1800XT512 does outperform the 7900GT in the majority of real world applications. Maybe not benching 2006, but who cares about that? Benchmarks are simply ballpark figures for performance. My point was that people seem to think that saying "an OC'ed 7900GT beats a stock X1800XT 512" is a valid argument, but when in reality, it isn't. I mean, of course if you overclock one card, and not the other, the overclocked card will perform better (assuming the cards are close in performance to begin with)! It's absurd that people can forge an argument like that. An X1800XT overclocked by 10% on the core will outperform a 7900GT overclocked by 10% on the core. Of course, then we get into the discussion of which can OC more. From what I hear, the 7900GT's are beasts when you pencil mod em, but not all are inclined to do so. The X1800XT has built-in voltage control making it easier and perhaps netting the same results as you can make the same (if not a higher) jump in voltage.
i know comparing oc and stock isnt fair, and also i dont really care about 3dmark numbers if they are used to compare different chips. i have to say however that i have been unable to find any tests comparing those 2 cards, so im not sure which is better. for overclocking, both have pro's and contra's, iirc, the x1800xt runs a hotter than the 7900gt, but if you got decent cooling, that should not be a real problem. and being able to change voltage 'on the fly' is a great advantage for the x1800.
i think i would also, although i do really like to see a test comparing them in performance, noise and power consumption.
i would like to see a good Benchmark too, but i dont know if i can believe the results ... all are different!
I had a similar choice to make, but at the time it was either the 7900GT or X1800XT 256MB version (which in 90% of cases performs the same as the 512MB version). A very good mate got the 7900GT and I got the X1800XT, they are virtually identical in terms of gaming performance. The only things that stand out for me when comparing the two; - The 7900GT is *a lot* easier to overclock then the X1800XT, tbh this is my only regret of taking the ATI path at this point. - The X1800XT has the image quality edge with HQ AF enabled. There is no bad choice between these two. Obviously if you want single slot go with the 7900GT. The only other real consideration is do you like red or green?
i was just saying that a 7900GT is almost guaranteed to go to 7800GTX 512 speeds and all you have to do is use power strip or coolbits no modding necessary and if you get better cooling and mod it you gan get to 7900GTX levels.i should have been more clear on the x1800xt as i am thinking of getting it if evga will give me my money back.trust me i have great respect for the x1800xt.
I love Green, i only have used NVidia - but ive heard that the X1800XT-512MB is a better card than GF7900 GT-256MB. Now i dont know what to do... some people says that the GF7900 is better, the other guys says that the X1800 is better an other says that both have the same performance... hm!
Well if you love green, get green. The X1800XT performs better, but only within around 7%, so you probably won't notice it anyways - if you'd be happier getting green, don't see why you shouldn't get it. However, if you want the best performing card out of the 2, the X1800XT is the way to go.
If your psu is crappy, then you could go for the 7900gt. The power consumption for an x1800xt is 450 watts compaared to the minimum consumption of 350 watts on the 7900gt.
