thanks for the important feedback. i suspected as much but didn't know.

are we headed towards a situation where games will be better off using an FX series (as low as a 5200) than a g3?

When games start coming out that run DirectX 9, you'll be laughing at all of us Geforce 3 owners. Don't throw away your 5200, it will have its time.

i'll hang on to it, but by then i'll probably buy something new.

    games i play now are:

    CS
    BF 1942
    Ghost Recon

    Anarchy Online
    SWG
    (maybe) Planetside

opinions on which card would be better on balance?

if i were you, install the 5200 and test some games, make note of FPS and quality etc. Then un-install the drivers, un-install the card. Power off, put the GF3 in, use older drivers I.E 30.82 and test games and compare performance. If you could post results on here , it would help alot of people out who are wondering about this :)

why did you buy a 5200 in the first place! lol a good old gf3 would do 'til you could afford a decent card. decent meaning NOT the 5200! :D

    jeesh...cause i'm a nooooob.

i thought i could get into a whole "new era" of cards and it would be an upgrade. especially since i missed all the g4s.

yeah ok, i'd be happy to do that. probably going to do it anyway.

for the fx5200 i'll probably use the the new StarStorm 45.23s. anyone got a request for which drivers for me to test the g3 with?

oh btw, does anyone know how to make sure i've CLEARED EVERYTHING i've done in the registry or to my detonators with Rivatuner?

Just disable rivatuner 1st, then add/remove programs remove drivers/reboot into safe mode (f8 at startup) and use a driver cleaner tool like Nasty File remover or Driver cleaner (can be found in nvidia driver downloads, driver cleaner is @ www.driverheaven.net ? ) then reboot, install new drivers.

I would use the 30.82 for the gf3.

To get rid of existing drivers i always use add remove programs for drivers then use nVidia File Remover, great little tool for selecting version numbers of each part. Then install new drivers, however ive never had to go into safe mode to do this.

    awesome help.

    thanks all.

is there any registry entries i have to worry about cleaning up in Rivatuner?

i'll follow everyone's instructions and list some results for both cards..

i'll run the GeForce3 with the 30.82s and the starstorms

and the FX 5200 with the starstorms only.

    OK...results for far...

    FX 5200:
Starstorm 45.23 drivers-#DMark2001 score 6538 (but better IQ)
    Nvidia 45.23 drivers-3DMark2001 score: 7500

    Geforce3 Ti-500
    Nvidia 45.23 drivers-3DMark2001 score 9150
    Nvidia 44.01 drivers-3DMark2001 score 9980

Frame rates were almost TWICE with the Geforce3 so the answer to this question is definitely stick with the Geforce3 if you have a choice.

Now....does anyone know a driver set that will max my framerate score on 3DMark2001 for a Geforce3 Ti500???

one thing i think that is worth noting is
yes for now you are better of with your gf3
yes ounce the dx9 game come out FX5200 owner will laugh at gf3 owner
but by the time dx9 game really get on the market the FX5600 will probably be at around the price of the actual FX5200 cuz by that time ATI and Nvidia will probably announce the arrival of soon to come new chipset that will get better core/mem speed so .... yes stick with your gf3 for now and by the time you need a gfFX you might have pilled enough money to get yourself a FX5900.... cuz the again remember that PCIexpress card are comming to the market soon and as time pass whe might start to see the advantage (i hope ) of those 64bits cpu so............ well that leaves us with a lot of so,so,so,etc.....

damn i even forgot DDRII ,how could i
