VERY smart from nVidia if true.
Reuse the technology while gpus are still massively overpriced to ship products no one would buy in a normal scenario. These GPUs also will have a very large chance of dyeing on people quite fast since so much power in such a small chip will create low durability due to electromigration and thermal cycling.

    Evil as always, but smart.

I love powerful PC hardware, like most guys here at Guru, but there must be limits to how much power a single part can use.

Those kind of values, if true, are completly stupid and terrible!

Wasting this much power "just" to play games is not acceptable!

AMD and Nvidia stopped producing cards gaming market. The fact games can still be played on their cards is puzzling to me.

  8. 800W? WTF is this? Has the whole world gone crazy while I wasn't watching?

Tbh, I doubt it will be over 500-550w when released. At 600w or above, it could be a PR disaster as reviewers skewer Nv over it. The never ending memes generated online from nuke reactors to egg fryers will be endless. Not sure Nv wants to put up with that, but you never know.

Nvidia probably hate to lose the rasterization crown to Navi33, which will probably use >600W too

the world has been going backwards for 2000 years now , so why not ...
we're supposed to make progress , make less filth and junk so the planet can heal itself despite us annoying the hell out of it
why is nvidia trying to destroy the planet with these mini-powerplants ?

Capitalism will find a way to destroy and heal the planet at the same time :D.

And there are tensor cores on these 4090 which can be used to power Skynet too.

Gaming is becoming more and more an activity reserved for rich people and elites.
Guess it was fun while it lasted as a novel entertainment option vs movies, that largely appealed only to male nerdy geeks.

You can still play games at 1080p on a - relatively - budget system and should continue to be able to do so for at least several more years. 4K ray tracing gaming is definitely out of the question for people on a budget, though.

Yes. If you can't at least buy a $5000 GPU that costs $100 per month to operate, then you haven't reached adulthood yet. I hope the GPU costs $10,000. I want to see $15,000 scalped and watch them fly off the shelves. I want to see just how ridiculous things can get.

The issue here is not the financial cost but the environmental cost.

I´m not a tree hugger but that doesn´t mean i´m okay with a single component wasting all this energy just to play video games.

Nvidia, AMD and Intel should agree with a certain limit regarding power usage, because things are getting out of control...
