I have to disagree here. 480 was just a half-baked fermi.
580 is not a refresh to me, but the real, fully functioning fermi. It's actually more like a 485 than 580, considering that they didn't even change the manufacturing node.

IMO it's 580 that should be compared to 285, not 480, and when you do that, you can see there is 80%-110% improvement in performance, in non-CPU limited games of course.

I'm tempted to wait and get GTX 685 SLI. The thought of running Skyrim at a constant 60fps has me drooling.

im using 3dmark vantage as a simple comparison.
    285 scores 12022 GPU score
    480 scores 17508 GPU score
    570 scores 21569 GPU score

you can argue that 480 was half-baked as much as you'd like, but all im saying is that taking the first step into new architecture and new manufacturing process has never been that great. the 480 was the first step into 40nm, just like the 680 has been the first step into the 28nm process. the optimisation and scalability of the shaders just isnt here yet.

plus, the 480 and 285 are useful for comparing since the 480 has exactly twice as many shaders as the 285. the 580 has 512 shaders, which is 113% more than the 285.

You can achieve that with a 680 aswell. And once Custom 680's start rolling out you can OC them like Mad and have the performance of a "685".

    Also:

There is a massive shortage of 28nm and there is LOADS of companies trying to make custom GTX 680's. We are already starting the 4th Month of 2012. That would mean in 5 Months nVidia should have to have their "685's" ready.

They might have some "685's" for show but at this rate i doubt the availability gonna be any good if not worse than the current 680's.

I don't know. GF100 actually has 512 shaders, but because nvidia rushed it, they were forced to disable 32 of them. That's the reason I'm saying 480 was not the real fermi. Do you remember any other nvidia high-end chip with disabled shaders at launch?

So if real Fermi has 512 shaders. What does that make your vga? It is still Fermi isn't it. A 480 is still a Fermi isn't it?

@Sever. The 2 cards are actually much closer to each other in reality. You linked the 480 bench with launch drivers for Fermi. The 480 is actually higher spec than a 570. Not by much but its there. And proving a card is that much faster by just a graphics score in a bench does not hold much water imo

if you look at other benchmarks, a 480 is still not double a 285's performance.

so why should we assume that 50% more shaders (that article's calculations are incorrect, 2304/1536 = 1.5) can lead to 50% more performance? scalability with shaders is not linear.

I did not assume anything. And this talk about the 285 nonsence bores the hell out of me tbh.

Wow .. 85% faster than a 580?! If true I might bite the bullet and buy a new rig with it

For now this is just rumors, Nvidia will not release anything better until AMD releases a better card.

I believe if Nvidia release a better Keppler card, it will be 25% better than current gtx680, at best.

I don't want to be rude, it's your money u do with it what you want ofcourse.
Don't flame me for saying this either. It's just curiosity.

I see most people with GTX580 or with SLI, why would you upgrade so early if you already have amazingly fast cards? I'm just wondering :D

    wth

Seriously? I just paid 550 canadian for a gtx 680. Now you gonna release a gtx 685? Ripping people off. How about people who spent 500+ on a gtx 680, can return their gtx 680 and pay whatever extra you need for the gtx 685.

SUch utter bull**** scams. These companies have the highest end card out right now. They release a ****ter version, call it a gtx 680, and then sell it for 520. Meanwhile, they could have easily done the same thing with the gtx 685, and made profits. Greedy ****ing bastards. I hate humanity.
