Anandtech shows different numbers, and a different verdict. Tomshardware is also concerned about the temps and heat. Oh well, if you go for the fastest single GPU videocard "today", you can't miss: GeForce480 GTX. But this is just for a little minority, friend. I don't want all that heat in my room, I don't want a card that is not environment friendly, and why not, I don't want one that is not my pocket friendly. Nvidia must work on the engineering of their cards in the future to get a better balance between all those factors. For the time being, they are only focused on performance at the cost of the rest it seems.

i know its hilarious to see people talking power / performance ratio lol. Who cares about power when u got a 1000W PSU and a quadcore running 24/24??? id say the GTX 480 kicked ass on its first day of Launch...

and in 2-4 weeks the new and GREAT drivers of Nvidia will milk an additional 10-20 performance ;) versus the HD5XXX series (which have alrady crappy driver support - speaking the truth).

As for the heat issue, Rivatuner or MSI Afterburner can crank up the fan to 70-75% and as Hilbert said u barely can hear the fan at that Ratio!

so all I AM gonna do is wait 1-2 month for the prices to come down 50-100$.
and wait for the GTX 495 Dual GPU (600$) to bring down the prices down further for the GTX480 (to 400$)... then i buy.

PS: i do agree with the majority though, 500$ for the GTX 480 is retarded. i know its the fastest single GPU on the market but still that a nonono price. im sure in 2-4 weeks it will go down to 450$ though.. so lets all be patient.

    ******

+ Massive performance in Far Cry 2 (GTX 480 is 4FPS away from the 5970)
+ GTX 480 adds 17FPS over the HD 5870 in Tom Clancy's HAWX
GTX 470 adds 10FPS over the HD 5850
    + Metro 2033: GTX 480 leads
+ Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -> GTX 480 takes the crown of the Dual GPU HD 5970
for some reason the GTX 470 is far behind the HD5850 (bug? driver fix likely)
    + Dirt 2 DX11 - GTX 480 and HD 5870 = Tie
+ Call of Duty 5: World at War --> Hilbert "In COD5 the GTX 400 series somehow rapes the Radeon 5000 Series, look at that GeForce GTX 470 go"
+ Crysis WARHEAD: GTX 480 trails the HD5970 by 10FPS behind
    + Just Cause 2: DX10.1 - GTX 480 - 470 win over the HD5970 (HD5970 driver issues)
    + Resident Evil 5 (DirectX 10): GTX 480 has 20FPS lead over the HD5870
+ StoneGiant BitSquid Engine DX11: GTX 480-470 are 11-21FPS in the lead of the 5870-5850 (which are far behind)
+ Anti Aliasing (32xCSAA) offers great performance
+ Tessellation Performance: GTX 480 leads (not so much though) still better results the ATi HD 5870

+ Still on Beta Drivers, and the cards kickass over ATI!
+ Tessellation performance is downright terrific with FERMI

O Neutral: Temps wise 93C is reached but fan is at 70% only.. so just put it at 80% manually and temps will get below 90C

    - Anno 1404: ATI in the lead.

    Pretty decent overclocker as well:

    BFBC2 at 1920x1200 at max settings/DX11/8aa, 16af:

It went from 52 frame average at stock clocks, to 62 frame average with the overclocked settings. That should translate into an extra 10 frame average with the less intensive games like ME2 etc.

No problem with heat whatsoever, as nothing is new (we've seen this amount of heat before)

I like the cards, though they disappoint in some games, they completely destroy in others, seems like the typical cards released every year really, except for where they destroy in other games, they REALLY destroy

That said i probably will wait for a refresh, or for the GTX 470 to go down in price

The only thing i'm disappointed in, is BFBC2, and not because of the performance, but because i have absolutely no reference to how these cards do compared to the GTX 200 series....

In SLI, Fermi is not a good deal at all. Too hot and loud, and extremely power hungry.

Nvida have always done that, and it always worked for them, why would they change now?

I don't want Nvidia to try and find a balance, that is what ATI cards are for.

Yes, 850+ PSU's here are very expensive (about 1000 and on). Not a good deal to have a very power hungry card roaring inside the case then.

So be it. I'll buy ATI always then. Thanks!

Sure, the new GeForce is designed exactly for people like you, that is, 0.000000000001% of humankind.

Yeah the elite are few in number, unfortunately the unthinking working class make up the rest, they are too set in their ways to recognize greatness, especially when it is beyond their reach.

Maybe you should upgrade your dual core, your PSU and your frame of mind before you consider another GPU upgrade you angry little man :D

The 285 was the top single card in the G200 range, it corresponds to the 480, not the 470. So wrong comparison.

If you want an environmentally friendly system, then, sadly, your whole system is out of date. Better luck next time.

I'm just going to go ahead and say you may want to opt out of the PC market, as that's not a PC enthusiast talking, that's a tree huger talking, someone who lives off the land, has no electricity, doesn't understand what a "m-i-c-r-o-w-a-v-e" is, and views the future full of tofu restaurants

Please, just opine about Fermi wihout doing so to justify your purchase. And avoid using adjectives that "little", "big", etc. This thread is about Fermi, no me.

And who are you to tell a person all that, I wonder?

I'm just talking general architecture here. Yes, the technical successor is the 480, but it's really just a pumped up 470 with more shader clusters. The architecture is the same, therefore that's why I was comparing the two. I expected at least a 50% increase from the 470 over the 285, and even more than that from the 480.

That is the point, friend. I'll upgrade my system this year and that's why I am so interested in the current proposals. Thanks for your obvious comments, anyway. Now, focus your attention on Fermi.

The person who is actually interested in technology, wants it to advance as fast as it can, no matter the power it takes, the heat it provides, how big the chip is, or the costs it take to produce.

    I am, a PC enthusiast.

So, opine about technology not other people posting here. Thanks in advance.
