    1. thats a 6 year old game

    why even test that anymore?

    2. thats ran in DX10 for both cards (just a theory) and not in DX10.1 which ATI cards support and beat nvidia easily with it here you go
    http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5850-review-crossfire/14

    beats the GTX285

    3. Well it all comes down to this but just get the gtx260 your cpu will be holding back the 5850 a good bit tbh.

I think you are getting lots of advise based upon your current rig and not your plans to upgrade. If you are going to upgrade you should get DX11 hardware. And you should wait for the price of the 5850 to drop. The 5850 are selling for a premium now because there is no DX11 competition. If Fermi is as good in the real world as it is on paper, the price of the 5800 series will fall.

    Are you being serious.

Ignoring the fact Far Cry is so old that i heard it was one of Jesus's favourite games.

How about looking at the results for the Stalker games or Crysis, something abit more accurate.
When games are getting 3-400fps who cares which one is quicker.

hahah... im leveling with IPlayNaked on this one..... he is saying what i mean!

HD5850 Is something scoffable when it comes to GFX cards.....only because i am waiting for a better version of a DX11 capable card

THE HD5850 isnt enough of a powerhouse in comparison to my GTX 260 to even make influence as to buy one..
Expecially when i know DX11 is still in its infancy

    ill wait till either :
    A.Fermi cards become avail.

    B. Ati makes a DX11 Card that Utilizes the Later more fine-tuned versions of DX11 that wont be out untill later in DX11's lifecycle

    C. DX11 is the standard and is common place...(which right now DX10 is the weak but common standard)

Ill wait for now till DX11 becomes a fine tuned platinum hit (which i think will happen shortly...)

I'll respond, since you named me specifically.

Far cry is really old. 350 FPS vs 400, not really relevant to anything at all. Even people using 3D glasses wouldn't care about the difference.

That HAWX is tested in DX10. HAWX supports DX10.1 and you can see here:

    http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5850-review-crossfire/14

That the 5850 not only spanks it but destroys it because of its DX11 (And by extension DX10.1) support.

You'll also note that the bottom of the barrel for performance per dollar is the GTX 295. It's a well known fact that you have to spend more money to get more performance. The higher you want to go, the more you have to spend, and each extra dollar will net you fewer and fewer FPS until it becomes $/FPS instead of FPS/$. That's just how these things work.

I mean, if we're basing all our decisions on price/performance alone then we should all be using a 512MB 4850. But that's not it. Price/performance is a pretty overused term considering it doesn't apply to anyone specifically. I might be willing to pay 20 dollars for each extra level of AA I can apply while you might be willing to pay 200 dollars for the extra AA. Price/performance only applies to you and what you're willing to pay for the performance you're willing to et.

Another reason the 5850 is DX11 which is future of gaming. Both of the other 2 cards will never support DX11.

In all honesty thats not really the best reason to own a HD 5000 series because by the time native DX11 games are released there will likely be much stronger DX11 cards out by that time that will smoke the HD 5000 series.

That should affect one's choice. Just because better DX11 cards are coming out in the near future doesn't necessarily mean one should get a DX10 card now..

rofl, what! are you serious, Far Cry is one of the most demanding GPU intensive games that brings many modern systems to its knees @ 2560x1600 16xQAA 16xAF!

LOL I run my 9600 GT on a 40" widescreen HDTV . And most of friends are also running 32" up also. Largest one a friend is using a HD Projection TV and 12 foot screen just for Eve-Online. And yes that is overkill but looks amazing.

Well ending side trip and back to OPs question.

Even a single, un-overclocked, 9800GT could run that game at those settings. "To it's knees" he says.

Far cry is most certainly NOT one of the most demanding GPU intensive games, as evidenced by the fact that were I to load it up at the settings I play at, max AA and AF, I would likely be at 300+ FPS. That is not the hallmark of a graphically intensive game.

What you have done, in fact, is convince yourself that AA and high resolutions make a game graphically intensive, which is a fallacy. Any game can have that resolution and those levels of AA applied.

In fact, I would say the fact that FarCry can be played with a mid-range card (GTX 260) at the settings you mention pretty damn well solidifies the fact that it is no longer a decent basis for comparison, which is why it is no longer used in most reviews.

The laughable moment comes when you take that Farcry review you linked and turn the page, to FarCry 2's benchmark, where, across the board, the 5850 is a good 30-40% faster.

the fact that you have to bench it at 3840x2160 (I mean how many people run that) kinda negates your credibility and so does the fact that, that video is of Far Cry 2 a totally different game; CryENGINE 1 vs Dunia engine :3eyes:
