Which one is an overall better card?

I understand that the 5850 is newer and supports DX11 and has GDDR5, but the 260 has a 448 bit memory bus over the 5850's 256 bit.

Is DX11/GDDR5 really utilized or make much of a difference in games now?

Oh and the 260 is also $100 less atm.

    Thanks guys!

The 5850 benches better than the GTX 285. So clearly there's no contest between it and a GTX 260.

The GTX 260 is pretty much dead even with the 4870 1Gb which has 800SP...the 5850 has 1440SP.

And the memory bandwidth is more than the 260 due to the gDDR5.

this has to be the funniest question I have ever seen the 5850 is miles a head of a GTX260 there not even comparable :p

    Dang!
Alright, well I guess after looking I found this Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161292
    It's only $159 after rebate.

After looking at the Guru3d comparison it looks like the 4870 is just right under the 5850 and it's almost half the price!

So would the 4870 be a better card than the 260 but comparible to the 5850?

    Thanks again!

I would go for the 260 over the 4870.

Kinda dumb... I am PRO Nvidia and even I would get the 5850 instead of GTX 260. IMHO in these times the only reason you would want a GTX 260 is to SLI it with another one you already own.

    No, its not even close

No, the 4870 and 260 are pretty much equivilent in performance, the 5850 is way faster.

On raw gpu power Warhead or similar is a better benchmark - http://www.guru3d.com/article/vga-charts-december-2009/5

    If i had a choice between a 4870 and 260 i would choose a 216SP 260

    I would look for a 260 216.

Stock vs stock the 4870 1gb and 260 are very similar...but the fact remains that the 4870 1gb is a terrible overclocker and the 260 is not.

If you're paying 160 dollars for a card then the correct answer is a 5770.

It performs almost exactly the same as a 4870(and by extension the 260) and overclocks miles past both of them.

But hell, if you're willing to buy the 5850, wtf are you asking around for? Buy it.

    Couldn't resist clicking on this.

As a 260 owner i can say it is/was a great card, but if you can afford a 5850 definetly get that, the review on here has it between 10-100% quicker than a 260 depending on the game.

What speed is your E6750 if its at stock, then it might not be fast enough for the 5850, and 2gb ram may not be enough.

I just went from a GTX 260 to a HD5850. Not only framerates are up and STALKLER CoP is another game now but HD5850 is colder, silent and almost no power consumption in idle.

Thanks for all of the replies thus far.

I will upgrade my whole PC when I do upgrade my GPU. I am first figuring out which GPU I want and then I will upgrade the rest of my PC accordingly.

It looks like what I've learned out of this thread is that a 5770 is the card to get if I'm planning on spending around $150, or shall I just wait for the prices on the 5850 to drop...kind of in a pickle. :3eyes:

i actually upgraded from a 260 55nm to my current card. the 5770 is less powerful than the 260, the 4890 is about as powerful as the 275, and the 5850 hits about 5870 speed when overclocked around 1ghz core and 4500 memory.

I switched from a 2600 Pro to a 5850.... so I can't say how much better it is lol. But it's in an oven pratically and it says coldish in there.

I have the GTX260 (1.8GB)------my card soo quiet... it rediculous!!!

what i dont understand is why my card has 1.8GB and other GTX260's only have about 896MB....

Did HP factory OC my card ?? or is my GTX 260 a Better, revised or newer version of the GTX 260

also is there a major difference between my GTX260 1.8GB card and the GTX260 896MB??

You'd need a magical OC to double the memory, its just the same card but with twice as much video memory.

It's definetly better than the standard one, but whether you would notice much if any difference in games would be up to the game.

I'm sure GTAIV would benefit though.
