Wouldn't it be wise to only get your network/chipset drivers installed first, then run windows update till it is completely up to date before installing Video Drivers?

That has always been my method and I have yet to run into an issue yet doing it this way.

Windows update has a lot of little fixes that can pertain to drivers, sli, and other things that you may not think. Just make sure you do not let it install the "updated" video drivers from Windows Update (unless you are using an onboard intel chip or something). Not a huge nono, but it is just useless for true gaming.

I thought the built in limiter only worked for opengl games?

Why? Through dozens of installs, this sequence has always worked for me.

Actually, I install the motherboard and network drivers immediately after the graphics drivers, before I do WU. And, I also disable Windows from automatically installing drivers.

This (290) driver branch is the first I have had this type of issue with.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I tested 65fps cap by UT3 and it works fine. But ingame cfg bSmoothFrameRate=true looked smoother :nerd:

on average, skyrim fps seems to be about 5-10 higher.. except now for some reason im getting moments where it drops down even lower then it was with the previous drivers

i can usually alt-tab in those cases tho and when i go back ingame its a bit higher but annoying to have to do that for times when the fps suddenly goes down into the teens

there is a bug just like in the previous 290.xx set, Gamma Correction default = ON but infact it's off.

also if you add some games manually, instead of showing the profile, it shows the path eg. Magicka shows "C:\Games\Magicka.exe which is plain stupid.

i lost 10 fps in Just cause 2 (all 3 benchmarks) and confirmed with fraps.

no loss in other games but performance seem jittery or like theres a tiny pause every 10-20 seconds compared to my all favorite set the 285.79 beta.

and finally in mafia 2, when the benchmark starts i used to get 90-99fps, now its 70-79, the final score however is on par with the 285.79 which is 56fps after 2 runs.

back to the 285.79. i gained nothing with the 290.xx anyway, if anything skyrim runs better with my older set. :book:

I had that bug since the whql release before that set. It's finally fixed in this one for me. Haven't tested games yet.

turns out I haven't gotten the 10 fps gain from these drivers.
AO was turned off and I forgot to turn it back on. I get maybe 1 or 2 fps from this driver over the beta before it.

an entire antivirus suite with firewall and all is barely 100mb while a bunch of drivers are nearly 200mb :D

ATI drivers on the other hand are only 109mb.

They have no Physx and no 3D though, right? My AV is around 300MB also and my line isn't capped so I won't mind ;)

International versions add almost another 50MB plus PhysX is another 25MB...and there you go.
Af course if you add in the Catalyst Control Center for AMD there is another 50+MB and huh...just about the same size....
On the other hand not that long ago a whole OS came on a handful of 1.44MB diskettes.:nerd:

I'm guessing it's because NVIDIA includes all drivers (32-bit, 64-bit, mobile, and in multiple languages) in one package for their Betas.
AMD also has around ~170MB for its Preview drivers (which is not an International version AFAIK), and that excludes PhysX installer (for games that needs it) which is around ~28MB.

All in all, not much of a difference between the two IMO.

Close...both AMD and Nvidia have separate downloads for 32 and 64bit OS.

The first Drivers you need to install are Motherboard Drivers.
