about $4.11US here in NZ. After a few months of a climbing dollar against the greenback our dollar reached .80c US, then it tumbled 10c in a week, I said to my boss I bet petrol goes up in a couple of days because of that, then overnight it goes up 3c, which sucks as the fuel we are buying now was bought in June or July!

Whats more NZ is an oil producing nation, we should have cheap fuel like the the US, but as our oil is so clean our local refineries can't deal with it, so we have to ship our own oil overseas and buy in crap! Thats just wrong.

Hell I don't know. It is $2.91 a gallon here as of yesterday down from $3.07 +/- a week before.

This state is swimming in light sweet crude so why is it fuel so f'n expensive here?

A lack of refineries in the US is one of the problems.

Lack of refinieries is problem, but to head off any oh noes the environmentalists posts, note that no one has made a serious effort to even build a refinery since 1976.
Oh and because this is an international thread, we really need to even the playing field for our bitching. If yoyu live in a democracy, you cannot really factor in the taxes. in theory, the people have control over this and this ofsets your income taxes, etc.
    For California, USA:
    $0.18 federal taxes
    $0.184 state taxes
91 (Motor+Research octane/2 which equals 95 RON which is what most of the rest of the world uses -- I pick this number because it is the lowest that is widely availible) octane gas price in Sacramento, CA is:
$2.89 (Cash price, credit is a few cents more)
    Pre-tax per gallon: $2.53

So, before you say, here in Norlondney has is $10/gallons OMGZORZ! subtract the tax price. You may find the pre-tax price is lower than ours.
Don't like you tax rate? Vote for someone else, this has nothing to do with fuel prices spiraling up.

yes, they exist in the us, but not in all other parts of the world
91-93AKI/95RON is a grade you can find everywhere
comparing different grades is not an accurate measure either

Sunday I filled up in Kentucky,(near Corbin) for $2.50
When I got back to Ohio a few hours later, it was $2.78.
NM+ is right, taxes play a huge role here.I remember in the 90's our Governor George Voinovich rolled back the gas tax to ease rising costs. Hint to politicians : he was re elected, and is now a senator!!!

PS just to bitch a little; There's no need to advertise $2.78 9/10.
Gas stations can take that 9/10, and shove it in their butts.

Not to make a political thread, but cutting gas taxes isn't always a good thing.
Gov. Pawlenty vetoed two gas tax hikes, and look where that got him.
/Hint, he's the gov of Minnesota.

I was looking through the gas logs for my father's old truck the other day and noticed that in 1997 he was able to get gas for $0.78 a gallon. And he averaged less than $1.00 a gallon up through around 2000. My question isn't just why gasoline fluctuates daily, but why it costs over 3x what it did a decade ago. Last I checked inflation isn't 300% overall for the last ten years.

As for gas in this area it was between $2.51 and $2.83 in this area today. That's down $0.03 from yesterday.

wouldnt that be because there is less of it than 10 years ago? sure inflation plays a part and taxes but the base cost of crude has goine right up.

Anyway - for reguar 95 Ron unleaded stuff we pay (average for my area) 94.7p/litre which equates to £3.68/gallon
At todays exchange rate thats 7.29 USD/Gallon. Nuff said.
