Does anybody agree with me when I say that Nintendo have made a huge blunder by releasing the Gamecube with a minidisc drive instead of DVD? I would never (and neither would my friends) buy a console that was purely a games machine. I think a lot of people will buy a PS2 or XBOX instead of a Gamecube (hardware specs and game lineup aside) because they double as DVD players.

For the record, I don't like consoles, because my PC does all that a console does and more, plus consoles are limited by the resolution of the tv. The only games that are better on a console are fighting games (MK, Street Fighter etc) which I don't play.

I daresay I have opened a large can of worms here.

This message was edited by daedalus351 on 09 Apr 2002 09:43 PM

nope, sorry......I really couldnt care less if it had a dvd or not.....wut makes a system is its games not built in options....besides, the lot of us will have multiple systems....ie ps2 or xbox...it also makes the gc 100 cheaper....and a helluva lot smaller....

so not having the option of playing dvds is not a biggie...i would still buy it for the games.....(RE!!!!!!)

It all depends on your needs , your budget and your tastes. Also, you need to buy a console on the games that are out and the ones that will be on the market in the near future: most good PS2 games will come out on all consoles, squaresoft is slowly coming back with nintendo, and capcom are releasing Resident Evil games on GC. Personnaly, I'm gonna buy a gamecube but only when Soul Calibur II comes out. That way, I know the system will have a couple of games that suit my tastes and more to come. Also, I don't need a DVD player since I already have one. Anyways, I can get a decent dvd player and a gamecube for the price of a PS2 (add a an extra controller for the price of an X-Box )

Just FYI, the PS2's current dvd player doesn't come with all the modern dvd options, and if you dont want to play it with your ps2 controller, the dvd remote will cost 30$CAN.

So , for me, the clear choice is a GC, but if I could afford it, I'd buy a GC, a PS2 and a new computer
" Look at how the X-box is powerful, surely it'll rule the console market with it's brute strenght!!"
" Pff...Nintendo is only a kiddie console. "
" PS2 ?&*!@ owns man! You can play ps2 games, DVDs, old ps1 games and listen to music!"

What amazzes me is how little research most consumers do b4 spendin' 400$ (CAN, mind you ) on a piece of entertainement...
Just to let you know, panasonic made it's own version of the GC. It'll play dvd's, GC games, and burnt GC games as well as imports. And it's about the same price if I remember correctly.

who uses the cd player on a psone? same kind of people that'll use a dvd player on a x-box or ps2.
of course, we don't buy these systems based on price or features, it is for the games.

Yup, it's called the Panasonic "Q",and it'll cost a little more than just the GC I think. Although, last I heard, Panasonic had no plans to release it out of japan!

Here's what it looks like:
It's already released in japan, and you can order it and have it shipped here. It'll play all US games from last I read.

First off, the Q as been out in Japan for some time now. Second, you might wanna take a look at this:
http://gear.ign.com/articles/356/356908p1.html
Good thing about the Q is that it's a real DVD player. The X-Box and PS2 DVD lack alot of the features that make DVDs what they are. Surround sound and/or DTS is missing (not sure wich, or if both ) and you gotta fork over an extra $20 for a PS2 remote control. The X-Box can't even play DVDs unless you buy the DVD playback kit wich costs $35. Also, it isn't guarenteed that every movie will work on your ps2/x-box.
As for the Q's:
Plays GameCube software and DVDs
Plays retail CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs
Dialogue Enhancer attenuates voices and center sounds
Cinema display modes for brighter or darker movie visuals
Two surround modes to widen normal stereo signals
Bass Plus feature deepens low frequency response for subwoofer owners
Separate subwoofer jack to utilize Bass Plus
Optical out supports Dolby Digital and DTS encoded signal for movies
Two RCA stereo jacks allow for multiple room music playback
Can be region modified to play almost any DVD and Japanese/US GCN software.

But anyway, all three consoles are good. It all depends on your needs.
FYI Daedalus351, consoles have always been solely games machine (up until the CD drives that supported audio CDs. But who in the world listens to CDs on their console....).
I doubt your system can run games that can be found on these 3 consoles While they are "limited" to the T.V's resolution, that doesn't mean the games are uglier. It's like trying to compare Apples and Potatoes...
Anyway, I just hope this doesn't turn into another console war...

I dunno for certain about the x-box, but I know the ps2 supports full 5.1 through a digital out. Some of the cut scenes in games are 5.1

I take your point when you say this but you are assuming I am happy with the current state of my hardware. The reason I still have this system is because I am a full time uni student and have no time for a job. If I did I would be keeping up with technology and I would imagine games for the consoles in question would run on a high end PC.
I didn't mean it to be a cosole war I just wanted to hear people's opinion

This message was edited by daedalus351 on 12 Apr 2002 09:58 PM

Call me a suck-up and spank me silly but that's why I love this board: I have no need to hide my love for the gamecube!

It's great to have a place where we can discuss in an objective/constructive way w/o having to worry about pesky sk8tin'-14years old-pot-heads

Bottom line concerning consoles and PCs: if you have enough money, buy everything and be happy (except the X-Box )
If i had the money for it I would buy a ps2, a widescreen tv and FFIIV-FFX which i have missed out on. But that's just me, if you're not into final fantasy then you might want to consider the other consoles too (i know GC will get FF eventually.. probably.)
