Don't forget that all the characters in the series are significantly older that they are in the books too. There was only so much they could do with Shae. If they followed the book, this series would almost be porn in some areas so I understand that. lol

For those that have readed the books, is the series a true adaption or a more free approach, like the Walking Dead comic/series?

It follows the storyline but it does stray a bit here and there.

True and the books are MASSIVE, it will be it's incredibly hard to even squeeze enough of the many "main story lines" in 10 hours/season/book and still have a lot of lore cut out. But they do try to follow the books as much as the time constrain allows.

I think they've done a great job in adapting it so far.
S2E1 was very good, and bodes well for the rest of the series.

Fantasy adaptations of this scale always have parts where they diverge from the original texts, it just can't be helped, the scale is too great.
To do it properly, you'd need 20 episodes a season, and no network is going to go for that.
Just look how different parts of the Lord of the Rings movies were, but they still managed to make a pretty decent stab at it

Am so loving this series thus far.. best show on TV next to New Girl (obviously not in the same category/league as they're totally different shows) however both actually get me excited to watch which hasn't happened to me regarding a tv show in YEARS.

I imagine the books would be much better than what they could fit in a tv show, but as I dislike reading books the show is perfect for me :)

If you dislike reading, I'm petty sure there are audio-books out there for ASOIAF :D (A Song of Ice and Fire, that's the actual name of the novels, A game of Thrones is just the title of the first book)...

Its a great series and I am definitely thinking about picking up the books just pressed for time lately, its just such a great series that I want the next EP right after I finish watching the last.

I had the same issue, I had no time to read the books. I decided to pick up the entire series (5 books so far) in eBook format to read on my SGS2 whenever I found a moment. Two months later I was done just from reading at bus stops/waiting rooms/walking places.

It was actually a really interesting experience. I always thought I'd need a lot of time because I envision reading as sitting in a seat under a lamp for two hours with a book. Carrying around the books on my phone let me very easily read whenever I had to wait for someone or something and before I knew it I was done with the series.

Of course he is, at least 2 more books will come out (6th The Winds of Winter and 7h A Dream of Spring). When asked if he will be done, he said he's firm that he will end the story with the 7th book "until I decide not to be firm" :p. So there are chances he will write more. All we can hope for is good health for him, though in case he dies he did leave the TV series maker some plots on how he would imagine the end of the story... just in case. :eyebrows:

It was decent up until the second episode - the fact that the changed Asha's name drives me insane. Not to mention the chick playing her doesn't fit the character at all. Stanis bangs Melisandre because he wants a son that his wife couldn't provide? Daenerys loses a bloodrider?

This isn't even to mention that they kind of spoiled Littlefinger, imo. Like during the novels you're kind of up in arms about whether or not littlefinger/varys is good/evil but the scene last night with him showed his douche card way too early.

And the backstory behind Davos/Slynt was completely removed, especially with Davos. The novel paints a pretty clear picture as to why Davos is so loyal to Stanis, learns how to read, his missing fingers, etc. The series skipped all of it. Davos is one of my fav characters in the book, in the series most people I asked don't even know who he is other then just another adviser to Stanis.

Dunno it's still good despite this, definitely one of the best shows on TV, the scenery is amazing, the CGI for the wolves - despite my initial concern is actually really good. But as someone who read the books and saw the changes they've made thus far, I'm really afraid of what changes and cuts they are going to make in the future. Most of what makes the novels so great is the insane amount of detail put into the characters and worlds. It makes it believable and not just another fantasy novel. Watching the show and how they change things is like changing history. You can't change history, it happened one way and we know how it happened! But yeah, I expected them to make some changes to fit the time for it, I just wasn't prepared for the changes they made =(

They had to change Asha's name. "Asha" and "Osha" are easy to tell apart on paper, not so much on TV. As to the way she looks, she's described as being slightly brawny and manly in A Storm of Swords and I think she fits well enough. A little chubby and stocky, capable of fighting.

As to your complaints about Davos, we haven't gotten to those scenes yet. Episode 2 ended only like 10 chapters into A Clash Of Kings, except they jumped forward a few Chapters to Craster's Keep in Jon's POV sections. Davos only has 3 POV Chapters in A Clash of Kings and his first one is the scene where Melisandre is burning the statues of the Seven, he speaks to Salladhor Saan, and then he's with Stannis advising on how to write the letter detailing Cersei's incest. So far Davos has been portrayed exactly as he is in the book, save for talking to Salladhor on a beach rather than in a tavern. Davos's next chapter happens well after the half way point of the book.

Here's a listing of the chapters in A Clash of Kings: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Chapters#A_Clash_of_Kings

Viewers of the show don't know anything about Davos because at this point in the book the readers don't know anything about Davos either.

3rd EP of season 2 showed a lot of betrayal and people aligning themselves for the future. Going to buy the books, I just have to know whats going to happen.

They are amazing books, I'm about a third of the way through A Storm of Swords. I do understand why they're giving us the Reader's Digest version of the story in the series. There's just too much to convey.

They are going to split A Storm of Swords across 2 seasons. So much going on in that book, plus I bet HBO realized they need to give GRRM enough time to get the next book written (at the pace he writes...)

I'm thinking season 3 is going to have quite the finale.
