Just started watching this over the weekend. Watched all 6 current episodes over the course of one evening. I am liking it a lot thus far, brings some much needed quality to television.
It is certainly quality television. They did a good job with the atmosphere and I think the script writing for the Imp is amazing. From what I've seen from excerpts of the book, his last speech which had me almost falling out of my chair laughing, was not nearly as funny in the book. I can also see some awards going to some of the actors here. I'm also hoping they do some changes to the main story line to keep those who have read the book surprised. I accidentally saw a spoiler (uhrg!) and I'm hoping it is wrong compared to the book and they put a new twist on it.
Crap. I saw the latest episode and could´t wait to see what happens. Crap, i spoiled myself real bad, Dam it!! Oh well waiting eagerly for the next episode, and i agree there is going to be a lot of awards flying.
Hands down the best Tv show I've seen in a very long time. The cast is fantastic, the pacing is spot on. I heard its been renewed for another season already, which is brilliant news. Hopefuly this will set a bar that future shows will aspire too.
Been an excellent show so far with some great acting and sets, consdering there's quite a few books I expect a long series.
Most HBO series are really good quality. However, that is because HBO gives it a movie budget. Now, your average TV show is probably 3-5m a season, I've read.(Ones without famous actors and whatnot, something like CSI.) However, let us look at Game of Thrones budget: 50-60 million. Each episode is around the budget of an entire season of another TV shows budget. There's even more expensive ones...Boardwalk Empire, another amazing HBO series, had one insane budget, 18 million dollars for the pilot episode. They rebuilt the Boardwalk Empire as it was in real life, so it was a mini-city, very awesome. Another expensive show is The Pacific, a great WW2 show. Not as good as Band of Brothers, but it's budget was up to 150 million. See, normal TV shows do not get that kind of funding, so it's obvious why they can't be so high quality.
Which is why I said 'aspire too' which while budget wise may not be possible, other aspects of the show may be. HBO has certainly impressed me with its support of Tv series with Game of Thrones, though I suspect my being a bit of a fantasy/sci-fi geek to the point I rarely vary genre, there are shows I have passed up on due to genre more than anything else. A favourite recent show of mine was Caprica. I thought it was fantastic, the story and pacing were a bit slow for most but I loved every minute of it. It had nowhere near the budgets described (SyFy show I believe? May be wrong) but the people behind it pushed it to be the best it could be.
You should watch Boardwalk Empire if you haven't...seriously amazing show and acting. It has the guy with the weird face and lips, but he pulls off a tough guy so well. I was worried at the start, because he's tall, skinny, and looks sickly, but he pulls it off brilliantly.
I just love that this show is a Fantasy show without all the generic elves and centaurs and what have you. The Fantasy genre suffers heavily from everyone trying to be like LotR and D&D, it's great that this show (and series of books) is doing its own thing.
I just looked it up, and it actually sounds quite interesting. I'll give it a go based on the quality I've seen with Game of Thrones (and of course recommendation) - as I said I'm a sci-fi and fantasy nut, but a change is always nice.
Well, as of episode 7 I have completely lost the plot. The series did a poor job of explaining the basic premise and background information. Anyone care to hold my hand in these dark waters?
It was released to HBO GO users as a full web-episode a week ahead of its TV air date. Now for the spoilers: Spoiler King dies, the good guy is supposed to take over but the bitch queen and the pimp miser out-maneuver him. Also the horse barbarian king is going to war and conquer the 7 kingdoms.
Yeah I know, it didnt have quite the impact on me because of some *******s on IMDb forums that was posting spoilers as thread titles. That last episode makes me want to read the books just so I know wtf is going on. I've heard from some fans of the book series that the show is actually really accurate to the books. Even some lines and the sex scenes are straight from the text.

Couldn't get past the first episode. Not very interesting. Never heard of the books before the show, as I'm not a huge fan of fantasy in general.
