FreeSpace, once again thrusting the player into the role of a pilot fighting against the mysterious aliens, the Shivans. While defending the human race and its alien Vasudan allies, the player also ge... Free to grab: Freespace 2 is free on GOG
One of the last great single player space shooters of the 90s...let's not forget they released the source code in 2002 and the people at Hard-Light Productions have been modernizing the Freespaces ever since and adding content, including teams who made a BSG full conversion mod and a Wing Commander campaign mod. Even flyable by mouse+keyboard easy enough iirc.
True PC games of that era and not console ports masquerading as PC games. Just because it is on PC don't make it a PC game. it makes the PC a console Emulator and we all know most emulators are not perfect. I just finished the Marine and Alien campaign on Alien vs Predator 2 and had way more fun than I ever did playing Far Cry 5. Games from that era are beasts. AVP2 can be found for free. I don't know the legalities, so no link I'm afraid, but it is on a website with all the extras to get it running on modern systems. It seems legit though and works well. NOLF and NOLF 2 can be found for free too. Tron 2.0 cannot since Disney smacked it on Steam and is still making money off it. Lithtech engine man. great stuff and fun today.
Still got my copy in the back in the days, still got it on cd with that HUGE box. Make sure you all to make good use of the texture mod and if your going higher res, also make sure to use the HUD scaling mod, it is absolutely fantastic. Take a gander at this video, Absolutely wonderful:
OMG Please please please an UHD Remaster of this series !!! Freespace (1,2) (were called Descent Freespace when I played it) are so awesome, best space dogfight games ever made.
Only the 1st were a sequel of descent (freespace as descent were in closed space) , the second flight on it own.
Freespace was never in closed space. It just borrowed the name in US market (and they could, since it was the same developer - Parallax->Volition), because Descent series were very popular at the time and they wanted to promote Freespace by reusing the name. But it's a totally different game with different concept, so no... it's not a sequel. They simply dropped "Descent" in their marketing later, as the new series became even MORE popular as the original "indoor" Descent series. (which btw has just been relaunched recently as Overload. - with the heads of the team being the same people that formed Volition) Damn I wish they would pick up on Freespace and revive THE GREAT WAR as well...
Mods for better graphics and rez etc from here (FreeSpace Open Installer) http://www.wsgf.org/dr/freespace-2 Spoiler Spoiler [/spolier]
