Foundry TSMC states prices of graphics cards and processors will increase by 9%

It´s called having a long term strategy.

Taiwain saw an opportunity 20 or 30 years ago in the semi conductor and they invested on it heavily hoping it would pan out and it did, big time.

In the mean time, developed countries only thought about the short term and immediate profits, so they didn`t invest in some crucial areas because it was cheaper to outsource them and now we are paying the price.

Such was the greed and arrogance from some countries that now europe is having problems with food because we bought so many of it from Ukraine...

 

Nvidia can charge any amount they want and still sell out over a long period of time.Last two years just proved this 100%.

Since RTX 3090Ti will be worthless,everyone can buy tham and watercool them for an extra $500 buck and screw Nvidia on the RTX 4090 new cards.

Why do people lie like this,it is just not true.No one has magic RTX 3080 cards that can play AAA PC games like the above poster is saying.I could be wrong maybe HH limits the monitors to 60Hz.

The only company that might surf the wave is AMD, they produce way less than Apple, nVidia or Intel and have room to increase market share. They might think of taking extra-capacity liberated by the "big" guys as a bonus to produce pro chips (CDNA 3/Epyc Genoa/Bergamo/Whatever high margins cloud products)

 

Unfortunately it's more like wishful thinking right now.

On the other hand I think that hardware today is ahead software and by much so if you have a solid system now there is no need to upgrade for up to five years I think...more than enough time - I hope - for this economical crisis to cool down.

I have a 5950X/RTX3080 and there is no application/game that I can't work with/play and I don't see something extraordinary appearing at the horizon...something like "but can it run Crysis?" or applications that need more than eight cores to run decent.

 

I've often wondered what action GPU and CPU manufacturers and chip suppliers would take short-term, if people committed to not purchasing this stuff for about a month.
Maybe they'd panic a bit at the prospect of little to no product moving.

 

People clearly don't like it but general inflation is currently running at 10%. Therefore most things are going to cost 10% more after a year. Competition is the only thing that can reduce the price rises. We are locked into an era of high fuel cost inflation with no end in sight.

Funny thing is, even if they do raise prices by 10% and Nvidia and AMD try to pass that on to the consumers, crypo mining is dead. So the only people that are going to buy new cards this generation will be gamers and artists. Those types of people aren't willing to pay double MSRP like crypto miners did. So what we could see is lots of RTX4000 and AMD7000 GPU's sitting on shelves gathering dust until prices fall. After a few months of no sales, retailers and manufacturers drop their prices. They panic and begin to cut their margin just to move stock before there's no profit at all. Which is what we're seeing right now with the current generation of GPUs.

Another thing to consider is that many people eventually got a RTX3000 or AMD6000 card so they're in no huge rush upgrade. Many people who bought an RTX3000 or AMD6000 series card did so for better compatibility with modern TVs and Monitors that require HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120hz, 10-bit HDR colour. RTX2000 series cards couldn't do that because they had HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1. And all of those 4K 120hz TV's on the market don't have Displayport so that wasn't really an option. But now there are tons of second-hand RTX3000 and AMD6000 series cards flooding the used market. People don't need to buy the next generation GPUs when these current generation ones provide all that is needed for a great gaming experience.

Nvidia and AMD are in a lot of trouble. They can't afford to play the inflation game this time around. Because hardly anybody will buy their cards if they hike prices.

 

remember that the 9% is on the msrp.. that means 109% - a LOT less than the 200% we had last gen… with raising prices of 50% on other common goods, a 9% raise is not that crazy..

LOL you give two examples of games that have low fps. Your only error is that the games I play are not listed here. Maybe you should have asked what games I am referring too before making yourself look a little silly. My point being MY, I guess magic, RTX 3080 has plenty of legroom left for the games I play. And if you are going to call people liars on the forum you should have your facts correct.

 

He gave examples on rt being enabled there is no way 3080 can get 165fps with all bells and whistles in those type games.

 

I'm still using my 290, amazing card when it came out reviewers at the time complained of it's high wattage, but now most cards on it's rage consume more.
I will probably not change it until it dies, i dont care for most games that have come in the last 6 years

 

You missed so much good games. Just get a rx6600 for 300$ and you can play anything you want.

"factories flooding" has happened often in Asia, less so in Japan, but when it did happen it affected the cost of RAM and VRAM for two years.

do you even know how much a single lithography machine costs? and at one fell swoop Kioxia lost over 100 - and these machines are not available "off the shelf" they are ordered 6 months to two years in advance.

"missing components" - is half of the crap that happened with Covid as small vendors weren't able to produce by LAW. i know i work at one of them (supplying Intel, AMD, Nvidia, GloFlo, Texas Instruments, Micron, Tower, etc..).

i mean i feel your frustration but you are barking up the wrong tree when the cost of everything (i.e. inflation) on top of the list above when most of this list is true.

and btw...low yields never stopped Nvidia one day - they just increase the price.

 

Indeed. I doubt we'll see an improvement unless the majority stop drinking the brand/corporate kool-aid and mining stays down long enough or for good. For other areas it's all on the former to control themselves and stop buying.

For me, the GPU has had new life breathed into it via the Linux drivers, which offer a pretty hefty performance increase in some cases. And yeah the 290 is practically cold compared to what's out today.
I also don't care for most [AAA] games that came out in the past 6 years. I could go on a long tangent about my gripes of modern games, but a lot of them just aren't that fun. They're more about squeezing money out of fans and ticking a bunch of boxes of features no matter how unnecessary they are. Some games are potentially really fun but it takes 2+ hours to really know how to play them, and I don't have time for that. I tend to go with a lot of indie games, since they're more to-the-point, they don't drag on too long, and they don't have the resources to be spectacular so they have to compensate by being more fun. Such games tend to perform well on my outdated GPU, sometimes even in 4K @ 60Hz.

Some how HH with his 3dGuru reviews has not managed to hit 166FPS Min on AAA title but you can with magic RTX 3080.
OH BTW I have plenty of RTX 3xxx cards I know the truth.

He plays on 1440p though which is much less demanding. Still no way 3080 can get 166fps in every game, thats silly.
