I have a RTX3080 and play games at 1440p. My lowest fps I get is 166fps on a AAA game at max settings and every bell and whistle I can check off. I honestly paid $1100 for it at the beginning of the pillage and plundering of the release. That is about my tolerance level for the 4000 release. So I don't have to buy this time around. I grew up in the 80's and remember well the recession then. Guess what, people still spent money on things they wanted and got car and home loans when the interest rates were between 18% and 10% at the end. People will still buy the new release, but with more belly aching about prices.[IMG]

I like to have strong midrange card every few years. Is that hard to ask, 4070 to not be more than 499$ to actually be available?

My personal politic for GPU/computer upgrade is, wait for the generation of card released after the generation of gaming consoles it's released

I hate to say it, but Karma is strong in this one.

Been saying karma a lot lately and it does do its job to keep stuff in balance, seen it on my own skin. Luckly it finally is good to me, but those that abuse others e.g. this price hike, well dont say I told you so.

TSMC is just doing good business... period.

yes our particular ox may get gored a bit.

but most people who post here are disconnected from reality as far as the business aspect goes.

did anyone truly expect TSMC to sit on their hands while Intel is doing the largest Capital expansion in their history?

and this time the advantages TSMC had with the ROC have been answered by the US and EU government (subsidies) contracts for Intel.

ALSO, on the same note that's why AMD had raised MSRP on Ryzen 3 because they knew what Intel was going to do. AMD dearly wanted to go hat in hand to get some of the good good gov't money but couldn't as their fabs are gone. GloFlo got some of that supply-chain cash, but a pittance compared to Intel.

You actually don't know neither does TSMC with the current situation, regardless of them trying to look positively at it.
We see prices go up basically on everything but not our payrolls, so at the end it may to the things we need to survive or that new GPU.
No one knows the next move in the current war either, remember that a lot of us here in the EU are closer to that warzone than what we would like to be.

    I`m thinking the same.

I think the problem is that tech companies picked some very bad habits due to covid and crypto craze and now they convinced themselves that the good times are going to continue forever and they can just keep increasing prices and selling everything they make.

But with inflation eating us alive i believe many are going to cut their spending on new "toys", like gaming, phones, TVs and so on, and those tech companies are going to suffer a lot...

Not to mention the end of the crypto craze.

Even car companies believe that from now on they can simply sell everything they make at the prices they want!...

actually both TSMC and i do know.

we know nothing of the war, but we know competition & supply and demand.

Supply and demand will decrease if we are forced to make choices that we could live without, which seems to become more of an reality every day.
Since no one really knows which direction it will turn to it may or may not crash even TSMC's house of cards.
Trying not to get to political about it, but we do have some mad dogs barking, if you know what I mean.
Most of us hope that the crap ends soon, but it doesn't look like it will.

Yup exactly. It's like everyone immediately forgets recessions and that they will occur. Every time it's, "Things will never be the same." Which in a way they are correct. Things will be different but the sky isn't falling. Corporations will pass the price along to the consumer as long as they continue to pay for it. When people stop buying the product they'll change otherwise it's business as usual.

That's my mentality for CPUs. For GPUs, sure, 1 generation is usually enough to have something that can match/exceed the performance of a console, but at a high price. It's 3 generations in until mainstream/mid-tier GPUs (as in, ones that are reasonably priced) are as good as console capabilities.

The crappy reality is, even entry level GPUs are overpriced. I've been itching to replace my R9 290 for 3 years now and I'd like to go 4K, but after 8 years, you're still paying the same amount for a 1080p GPU. Sure, maybe now I'll get raytracing, more video decoders, can increase AA, or something that uses half the wattage, but it's rather stupid that I'm otherwise paying the same thing for roughly the same overall experience after all these years. I want something that is an actual upgrade, and I'm not willing to spend $500+ for something that is barely capable of 4K@60FPS.

Same issue that I face with an ekstra computer, although I have no need for 4K 60 fps on that one, still, I'm not going to pay for what low end GPU's currently are at either, even if that might mean that it will become useless over time.

@Hilbert Hagedoorn Its GPU's not graphics cards that TSMC is increasing prices on. I know im splitting hairs but a cost increase on the raw parts to build a graphics card, usually has a bigger impact due to margins.

The entire cutting edge tech sector held by the balls by a single company on an island on the other side of the planet, which is going to be invaded by the largest country on Earth in the near future…

    What could possibly go wrong?

It was a colossal mistake by the developed world to have allowed themselves to put too many eggs in TSMC's basket. They should have established their own large scale fabs to fill in for any shortages that may occur if any of the worlds main fabs go out of commission. It was a stupid thing that they only realized recently during the chip shortages of last year. Ideally, they need enough new fabs and expansions to come on stream to be able to do without TSMC entirely.

Except that I referenced crypto situation in my post, but I guess saying "last couple of years" instead of spelling out words CRYPTO was too difficult to understand to you, although other people had no problem picking up on what "last couple of years" means in relation to GPUs. If you truly believe 4080 will be 700 Eur at stores, I don't even know what to tell you.... :Do_O And it doesn't even matter that mined to death 3080s will be 400 eur or whatever, most enthusiasts don't want last gen garbage, especially one used up in mining farms. So, long story short, old crappy 30 series cards will have almost 0 affect on shiny new 40 series cards. Even if there are truckloads of old cards.

This was your original post I was referencing:
Your saying "what happened last couple of years" yet continuing with the implied assumption that the same will occur despite zero mining demand this time around (which jacked up prices to obscene levels with Ampere) does suggest you were completely oblivious to cryptos effect on GPU pricing. No way around it, you goofed with your argument.

Also seems you were unaware that Nvidia paid TSMC extra $ billions for added production capacity for RTX 4000s to avoid the sort of shortages that occurred with Ampere. Now Nvidia is stuck with a huge TSMC contract that they cannot back out of:

But then they wouldnt suckle on the proverbial profit tit for the last 40 years. Hey we'll let those asians do crap for dirt cheap WCPGW.

    40 years later.

Hey, those asians are now making everything and got us by the balls, what gives?

So hypocritical... complaints about the tech companies raising prices while the vast majority of those on these forums have hardware from the last generation or two... three at most. If you're going to keep feeding the monster, the monster will keep growing and will eventually eat you alive.
