HIya, Looking for recommendation... I currently using a Pentium G3258 in the server role (like hosting a game server). I'm thinking of picking up a Ryzen 3 2200G as a replacement since the wattage is very similar plus it has more core and faster. Then I just remember a while back I have acquired a i7 2600k for free which I have recently put back together and I thought that would be an excellence replacement but then I read that it uses more energy then the Ryzen 3. I guess I like something that has build in video card and at least quad core but very energy efficient. I believe the server I'm going to host will take advantage of the additional cores. Any thought?
Little confused. You said you picked out the 2200g because of the wattage, but then you don't take that into consideration when you're talking about the 2600k, which would not be similar wattage? If you're looking at staying within that wattage bracket, go with the 2200g, if you're not, get a higher end ryzen, or since you have the 2600k, use that.
Well I guess I like the 2600k since it has more threads than the 2200g but I do like to 2200g for the low wattage usage... yeah, just wanting to see see if anyone has used either processor not none gaming purpose like hosting a file server or hosting a game server like Counterstrike Global Offensive... and which one would be more suitable. Sorry for the confusion.
2600k having more threads in a server environment "can" have a decent use for it. For example: Many server companies, specifically for games, rent out threads to customers, not cores, which means they get 2 potential customers per core. For source-based servers, this can be mostly fine, and since those types of servers rarely use more then 1 thread. That being said, the higher single-core performance comes into play for better performance. So it really comes down to: How many servers will you have? More then 4 on the same PC? Then the 2600k is the better bet. Less then 4? then the next step: 2600k default clock is 3.4Ghz, and is an older architecture, vs 2200G default clock at 3.5Ghz, and is a newer architecture. If left at stock, the 2200g for single-threaded applications will likely edge lead, except: Turbo/boost. 2600k has a turbo of 3.8Ghz whereas the 2200G only has 3.7Ghz All of this isn't taking into consideration OCing, as again you have stated wattage being a factor your care about. Ultimately, if you're going to put less then 4 servers on the same system, and you don't OC, it likely won't matter if you put in the 2200g or the 2600k from a performance standpoint, it'll only matter from a wattage standpoint. There are two other factors though: 2600k uses DDR3, whereas 2200g uses DDR4, how this matters in a server environment? That i do not know and could be worth looking into The other is the IGP comparison, of which the 2200g will have about 4+ times more powerful IGP then the 2600k. How this matters in a server environment? Again, that i do not know, it probably doesn't aside from the fact that OS's are using GPUs to a degree and POTENTIALLY something you use on the server may use the GPU for extra performance as well, but this is unknown to be, could be worth looking into. So ultimately, my original statement still stands If you're looking at staying within that wattage bracket, go with the 2200g, if you're not, get a higher end ryzen, or since you have the 2600k, use that. The higher-end ryzen would ofcourse beat out the 2600k for the same wattage.
Thanks for the reply. After reading your post as well as Hilbert's excellence Retro review of the 2600k I think I'm going to retire (ebay) the 2600k and going to either the Ryzen 3 2200G or the I3 8100 since both does have the same wattage and I think the 8100 is a bit faster although Microcenter has a decent sales on the 2200G. As far as the server goes, I'm planning to host an emulated World of Warcraft server so I think the faster memory will help (use mysql) but does not need much of any graphics at all. I would look at the Ryzen 5 1600 but it does not have any internal graphic so I have to pass.
