It was a crazy weekend. I've been on the hunt for a 3970X but there have not been any opportunities to find one.

Over the weekend, a few Micro Centers around the country got some in stock, unfortunately not the one near me.

I knew I had some time to kill and an extra $600 put towards the expediency of my new build was worth it, so I flew from Los Angeles to Minneapolis, rented a car and went to Micro Center in St. Louis Park to pick one up. They had three in stock, but there's only one left now.

Aside from a small issue with my credit card (cleared up once I called Chase), the transaction went smoothly and I walked out of there with a brand new 3970X!

In the moment, it was totally worth freezing my ass off for, as I don't really own any "real" winter clothing and it's butt-ass cold in Minnesota.

Grabbed some dinner, went back to the airport and spent the night slumped over in a very uncomfortable terminal seat while I waited for my flight back to LA this morning, all the while clutching my new baby.

Just thought you guys might appreciate the lengths to which some of us are willing to go to get one of these.

    You are one dedicated trooper!

This is why I ordered a 3950X on day one - didn't want to deal with delays or resort to extreme measures.

And the following day the Micro Center near you got some new stock I bet... :D

J/k and a nice story. Would never do something like that for a PC part myself but doesn't stop me from appreciating the effort of others.

This is a great story. I'd do it if I had the extra cash, along with things like buying 20 of every component I intended to use. I would then bin them all and use the best one, sell off the rest and repeat with every new release.

Imagine not only having the best individual components, but the highest clocking sample of each of them. I'm drooling at the thought of a TITAN RTX water cooled between 2100MHz-2200MHz core and a 9900KS@5.2GHz+ / Ryzen 9 3950X@4.4GHz+

Well already spending 2 G's on a cpu why not fly to get it :)
If you have the money to spend on an airplane ride to and from, well no saying anything against the sort. If it's your money, it's your choice to spend it.
While my limited income only affords me a 3700x while still having my sanity (and not months / a year of bills), I entirely get where you're coming from.
More power to you, enjoy your new system.
One thing you can rest assured of: You'll never be cold while using that new computer. Sure it's no intel furnacium, but it's as close as you'll get to one.
You should write AMD in classic customer testimonial fashion.
