    Cyberpunk 2077

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a huge success for developer CD Projekt RED, selling millions of copies and getting tons of positive reviews. As such, it’s to be expected that people will want to compare its newest game, Cyberpunk 2077, to its last one. But in a new interview, the studio has explained that its approach to making games has changed significantly with the newer title.

In a new interview with PC Gamer (Issue #324), CD Projekt RED’s lead cinematic animator Maciej Pietras reveals that the team has put a special effort into making Cyberpunk 2077 more “seamless” than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Pietras notes that while its fantasy RPG features a notable “transition” when talking to NPCs and exploring the world, for Cyberpunk 2077 the team wants “the blend of story and action to be seamless.” Pietras adds that this is “really challenging from a writing perspective.”
Making this seamless is more than just removing transitional animations, explains the developer, who says that ‘if you turn and look at something during a conversation, we want the NPC to notice.” The reactivity in Cyberpunk 2077 is described as “super high,” likening it to being “an actor in a scene, rather than just passively watching it play out.”

If that sounds incredibly detailed then it is. Throughout the report, the CD Projekt RED team details some of what to expect from NPC behavior. For example, the game has a “huge library of facial animations” that allows the developer to highlight subtle details in NPC’s faces. Pietras gives the specific example of a street vendor trying to sell food, with the enthusiasm being clear in his body language and his face. Fans will only have seen a small slice of these animations in the debut gameplay footage, but the potential is positively intriguing.

These aren’t the only ways in which CD Projekt RED is hoping to improve Cyberpunk 2077 using what it came up with on The Witcher 3. The studio has also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a much larger map than its last RPG. While quality is more important than the sheer size and scope of the world, many feel confident that CD Projekt RED will fill it with things to do.

Ultimately, there are probably lots of even smaller changes that the developer has made based on feedback to The Witcher 3; changes that haven’t even been hinted at yet. But considering the huge anticipation for its new game, fans will be very glad to find out.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, while its release window is unknown at this point in time.
