Developers can now port their games to the DX12 API more easily than before

Microsoft has announced that that the D3D12 Translation Layer is now open source. As such, developers can now port their games to the DX12 API more easily than before.

According to Microsoft, the D3D12 Translation Layer is a helper library for translating graphics concepts and commands from a D3D11-style domain to a D3D12-style domain.
Theoretically, this library can be enough for developers to port their games from DX11 to DX12.

Thanks to this library, developers can leverage the D3D12 Translation Layer library as-is in their game to port their existing work to D3D12 faster.
Developers can also take advantage of a tested and conformant IHV DirectX 12 driver via your own D3D12 wrapper.

Alongside the D3D12 Translation Layer, Microsoft has also opened sourced D3D11On12. D3D11On12 is a mapping layer that maps graphics commands from D3D11 to D3D12.

You can download the D3D12 Translation Layer from here, and the D3D11On12 from here.

    Horizon Zero Dawn

According to Schreier’s sources, Horizon Zero Dawn will be indeed coming to the PC in 2020.
However, don’t expect to see this game in February 2020 as the earlier rumour suggested.

    As Schreier wrote on Kotaku:

“This news comes from three people familiar with Sony’s plans, all speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk to press.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.”

PC version of The Last of Us 2?

Now here is something really interesting. Naughty Dog is currently hiring a Graphics Programmer for The Last of Us 2.
The candidate must have experience with DirectX 12, Vulkan or other modern graphics or compute APIs.
Not only that, but he/she must have thorough understanding of both AMD GCN and NVIDIA CUDA architectures.

Now we all know that the current-gen and next-gen consoles are using AMD’s graphics cards.
As such, these requirements may hint at a PC version of The Last of Us 2.

Today, Unity Technologies released its full length version, showing what game developers can currently achieve in Unity Engine.

The Heretic uses Unity 2019.3 and pushed Unity’s graphics features to the limit. This demo includes every possible aspect of the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) with the integrated Post-Processing stack, and the Visual Effect Graph.

The Heretic Tech Demo also takes advantage of motion blur, bloom, depth of field, film grain, color grading, and Panini projection.
Furthermore, it packs real-time lights and uses a probe-based lighting solution.

    Doom Eternal

As id Software’s Marty Stratton claimed, Ray Tracing isn’t currently a top priority for the team.

As Marty Stratton told Digital Foundry:

“So we actually haven’t talked about that at all. And we, quite frankly, haven’t spent a ton of time.
The team basically did some initial implementation and exploration about a year ago. At that same time, we had so much that we wanted to do with the game still.

Our tech team is the biggest fan of new tech.
Som it was a little hard to pull everybody off of that because it was the shiny new toy but when we’re talking about getting the game out there and getting out as close on time as possible and at the highest polish quality, we kinda had to pull back that effort.

It is something that they [tech team] are like literally just about ready to start looking at it again.
And they actually have some interesting ideas. I don’t want to go too far down on that path cause who knows what exactly we’ll do.
However, there is more that you can use the technology for than just reflections, shadows and the real-time lighting.”

Stratton concluded that id Software has some pretty cool ideas that will both make the game look better, and make it easier for developers to create new ray traced content.

Doom Eternal releases on March 20th!

A Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake is reportedly in development

A report from cinelinx has stated that a "reimagining" of Star Wars, Knights of the Old Republic is in development, saying that two independent sources have confirmed the story.

The game is said to be a new canon remake of the original games, bringing the series into Disney's Star Wars canon.
Elements of the Old Republic has already been seen within recent Star Wars movies, comics, TV shows and novels, but remastering these Star Wars classics will undoubtedly bring the series into the official canon.

This remake is said to be a "reimagining" of the originals, taking elements of both KOTOR I and II to deliver a modernised take on the originals.
Other changes will likely be made to better fir these titles into the new Star Wars canon, though I'd hope that they don't change too much of what made the originals great.

EA is currently working on several new Star Wars projects, and the success of Jedi: Fallen Order has shown them that there is an appetite for more nice Star Wars gaming experiences.
Sadly, at this time it is unknown how far along this new project is, though it is likely that E3 2020 will bring with it a progress report on EA's plans with the Star Wars franchise.

Yes Please (i've finished this game 4 times ;))
